Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 12 - God's Favorite Color

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

Pearl walked over to Xi, who had her head under the covers. "You awake?” Pearl said. “Want to go look at the horses before we go to church? Surprise is going to have her little surprise in December, or maybe even the new year!"
Xi mumbled something Pearl couldn't understand.
I have a great idea! Pearl thought, and giggled. Vivace whined and jumped up from her rug in the corner. Pearl picked her up, and whispered, "Hey Vivace, let's really wake her up!"

She tugged gently on Xi's covers, and held her dog right above Xi's head. "Hey Xi, can we talk? I want to tell you something," she said, in a loud voice. This is going to be such a blast!
“What’s so funny?” Xi mumbled, then pulled the covers down--and stared right into Vivace's furry face.
     "What the--"
     "Surprise!" said Pearl, and laughed.
"Not cool!" said Xi. Her hair was really messy, and she looked mad. "I like your dog, but--just don't do that again, 'K?!" She looked at her cell phone. "It's so early! Don't turn on the light yet, unless you have some shades for me to wear." She looked around. "What day is it?"
"It's Sunday," Pearl said, setting Vivace down."We get to go to church today!"
"Ugh," said Xi. "Right. Um, if you guys don't mind, I'll just stay here. I need to catch up on sleep. I kept waking up, wondering where I was, and I'd remember, then have nightmares and junk. I tried to listen to music really low, and I texted a friend to tell her I was not going to be in school next week..." She sighed and pulled the covers under her chin.
"Sorry, Xi. You could have woke me to pray with you." She's got to go with us! Pearl thought. She needs church more than we do! And she probably had nightmares because of that junky music! "Xi, you are with us now," Pearl said firmly. "Watch your eyes!" she said. The more Bible, the better!
Xi laughed. "And how can I do that? Take one eye outta my head and look at the other one? That's weird!"
Pearl giggled. "You're right! I mean cover your eyes, ‘cause I'm turning on the light!" Both ways! she thought.
Xi groaned, but put her hands over her face.
Pearl flipped the switch. She put the dog down, and grabbed her Bible. She'll like this, won't she, Jesus? "Let's talk more about Exodus--"
"You sure that's not a rock group?" Xi said. She sighed, sat up, and kept her eyes covered.
"No. It really is the second book in the Bible!" Pearl. "It's where God tells Moses how to decorate the temple, and He always starts with blue. Even about the clothes for the priests He starts with blue! Remember, we talked about this before?"
"I'm too sleepy to remember," said Xi.
“Wait,” said Pearl, “you have a Bible. Do you want to look it up?”
“Is it in the new part?" said Xi. "That’s what your mom said I have.”
"No," said Pearl. "it’s the second book in the Old Testament, so we’ll look in mine. Queen Mother said we need the whole Bible, or God wouldn't have given us both!" She pointed and held her Bible close to Xi. "Here it is, in chapter 26, the first few verses: 'Make the tabernacle—that’s the temple--with ten curtains of finely twisted linen and blue'—See?"
"I trust you," said Xi. "I'm not opening my eyes right now, without shades!"

"Anyway, the main color is blue!” Pearl said, and continued, “'purple and scarlet yarn, with cherubim woven into them by a skilled worker--'”
     “Cherubim?” said Xiomara. “What's that?”
“Special angels,” said Pearl. “They have six wings and forever fly around God's throne, and cry, 'Holy, holy, holy is the LORD God Almighty. The whole earth is full of His glory!’ That's in Isaiah and in Revelation.'"

"Cool," Xi said, her eyes still shut. "Let me read a little more," said Pearl. "You OK?"
"Knock yourself out," Xi said, lying down and pulling the covers back over her head.
"’All the curtains are to be the same size—twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide,’” Pearl read. “’join five of the curtains together, and do the same with the other five. Make loops of blue’—See, more blue!---‘material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and do the same with the end curtain in the other set.’”
     "See?" Pearl said.
“Wow,” Xi said, still under the covers. “He really knows what He wants!”
“Yes, God cares about details. There's a lot more--"
"Princess," Xi said, sticking her head back out, "I'm gonna go back to sleep, okay? No offense. I'm just dead tired, haha." She turned over and faced the wall. "Thanks again."
"Okay," Pearl said. But she really needs to go to church! "Anyway, can you hear how He mentions blue first? See, I’m right!”
"Sure, Princess. You’re right," Xi said. "G'night."
“And I think God’s favorite animal is a horse," Pearl said.
“But how do you know?” Xi said, sounding sleepy.
“Because He is coming back on one--the most splendid white horse of all!" Pearl said, more excited than ever. "It must be a Lipizzan or something--or better than one, if there is such! Of course, God can create the perfect white horse. And I want to ride one, like Jesus will!” Her hands went up in the air, Vivace barked and danced around.
“Right," said Xi, in a low voice. She turned back over and shielded her eyes. "But just because you like horses doesn't mean He's coming back on one. And when is He coming to rescue us from this big mess?"
Pearl picked up her Bible. "Xi, Jesus always means what He says, and He says He's coming back very soon!" She opened it to Revelation and flipped pages. "It's in here somewhere. Queen Mother showed me. Hmm. Anyway, I think it's chapter 20. I’ll have to ask her, but I know He is coming back on a white horse to take us to Heaven and is bringing His rewards for us!”
“I've never heard that," said Xi. "Of course, I haven't heard most of what you guys talk about! But I don't know why you'd lie.” Xi turned back to face the wall. “No offense, but I’m going to sleep now. See ya later!” She pulled the covers over her head.
“Is that all you can say?” Pearl asked.
Xiomara was quiet for a few seconds. “I don’t know what else to say,” she mumbled, still facing the wall. “How about awesome and goodnight?”
“No, Xi. I can only use 'awesome' for God!”
“But lots of things are awesome," Xi said.
“Not to me,” Pearl said. “If you look up the word and what it really means, like Queen Mother had me do one day, you’ll see that really only Jesus is awesome! Also, a minister we watch said that we all have a white horses, and the horse follows us better when we obey better. Cool, huh!"
“Hmm,” Xi said, turning over and sitting up. “I guess. But let’s see if you’re right about this!” She threw her pillow playfully at Pearl. “Now will you go to church and let me sleep?”
Vivace barked, as if concerned. “Mpfh!” Pearl squeaked, as the pillow lightly hit her chest. "It's all right, Vivace." She threw her pillow back at Xi’s head. Maybe she’s waking up enough to go to church! she thought.
Xi laughed, her eyes still closed. “Don’t you know every human sees things differently? My science teacher last year said it’s just the way the light hits the retina or whatever that thingie in your eye is called.”
“Well, Ms. Science, are you trying to disagree with the Princess?” Pearl said in her best Royal Voice, then giggled.
“Not at all, Your Highness," Xi said. "I was just helping you make sure of what you believe—like the fact that humans need sleep!” She threw the pillow back.
“I know Whom I believe!” Pearl said, and threw it at Xi again, then threw a smaller pillow too. “His name is Jesus—my Big Brother! Hey--" she grabbed her Bible again and read aloud. "Listen to this! Jesus says, 'Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.' That's Revelation 22:12!"
Xi shook her head. "I guess I don't have any rewards."
"You can, though!" said Pearl. "You can be my big sister!"
"What?" Xi laughed. "Why would you want me to be your big sister? You don't really know me." She threw both pillows towards Pearl.
Pearl let them hit her shoulder, and she just stopped at looked at her friend. "Xi, I like you, and I know God sent you to us. And you can have great rewards. But you have to let Jesus be your Savior and LORD and BFF, and then God will be your Daddy, and He will watch over and help you and give you such a great life!" She threw the pillows back. "And you would really be my big sister, then! See, when we get Jesus in our heart, He's our Big Brother, and God is our Daddy, and all of God's kids are brothers and sisters!"
Xi threw the pillows to Pearl. "I hear ya," she said. "Anyway, looks like the reward thing is working for you! I just want to go to sleep--for a long time." She laid down again, and pulled the covers over her head. “Bye. Really,” she said.
I guess I've done enough, Jesus, thought Pearl. You'll have to work on her heart!
“How are my girls doing?" asked Queen Mother, standing at the door. "I heard some of your deep conversation."
Xi turned back to face them and pulled the cover down. “We were just talking about God's fave things while we have a pillow fight," said Xi. She sat up and shielded her eyes.
Pearl's mother smiled. “I see. Well, I’m sure that you both are God's favorites! He loves it when you talk good about Him, no matter what you’re doing. Just be easy on each other. I love both of you!” she said, and hugged them.
“Thanks, Mrs. Williams,” Xi said. “Your mom is so kind,” she told Pearl.
“You’re right about that!” said Pearl. “God has given me the best mother!”
“Thank you, dear," said her mother. "Did you sweeties also know that, in Malachi 3, the LORD says He is putting the words of all us who honor Him into a special book called The Book of Remembrance? So when you brag on Him and what He’s done, His angel writes down your words in that Book." She looked at Xi. "Pretty cool, huh?"
“Wow!” said Pearl. "Yes, let me find it."
"Pearl, Malachi is the last book of the Old Testament," said her mother. "Right before Matthew, the first book of the New Testament."
“Mrs. Williams," said Xi, "if I brag on God, will that work for me--even if I'm not His kid yet?"
"That's a great question," said Pearl's mother. She reached for Pearl's Bible. "Let's see what God says. Yes, here it is, in Malachi, chapter 3, verses 16 and 17: 'Then those who feared the Lord talked often one to another; and the Lord listened and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who reverenced and worshipfully feared the Lord and who thought on His name.' It doesn't say that you have to be in Christ to have your brags on God written down, does it? At least not here. So, remember to always speak well of the LORD--"
"Because the Recording Angel writes down everything you say--not only the good, but the bad, right, Queen Mother?" interrupted Pearl. I remembered!
"Right!" said her mother. "We want our good words to be sweet and helpful."

"I've said a lot of bad words," Xi said, looking worried. "I hope God has a huge eraser!"
"He does," said Pearl. "It's the Blood of Jesus!"
     "Right!" said her mother.
“See Xi, no worries," Pearl said. "God knows all things, and if you didn't know how to talk right, He understands!” Queen Mother said that He understands more than we think. She showed me a verse about how He is greater than our hearts, ‘cause our hearts can be tricky and make us feel bad sometimes, even without the enemy’s lies." Pearl looked at her mother. "Is that in John, Queen Mother?"
"Close, Precious," her mother said. "It's 1 John 3:19."
Xi was just staring at them and listening. At least she looks more awake! Pearl thought.
"I don’t understand everything, either," she said, looking Xi in the eye, "but I trust Jesus!” As she spoke, she felt a rush of confidence. Jesus is helping me, and speaking through me! Yay!
"Preach!" her mother said. "You sound like your father, Pearl!"
This is fun, Jesus! Pearl thought, and gave a high-five to her mother. “Xi, He tells us to not be afraid, ‘cause He wants to save us, like verse 17 in Malachi 3--that next verse-- says: 'And they shall be Mine, says the Lord of hosts, in that day when I publicly recognize and openly declare them to be My jewels--My special possession, My peculiar treasure. And I will spare them, as a man spares his own son who serves him.'"
“Wow, you know a lot," Xi told her and smiled. "That’s awesome,”
“No, Dear,” Pearl corrected. “God is awesome! Are you ready for breakfast?”
Xi just shook her head and said nothing. "I'm really not hungry, but thanks. I just want to sleep!”
”Xi, please eat something. You'll feel better," said Pearl's mother quietly.
"I told her about decorating the temple, Queen Mother, and that God's fave color is blue,” Pearl said.
"Yes," said Xi. "That was awesome."
"Now that's a good use for 'awesome'!" said Pearl, and smiled. "And I'm so glad you agree that The Awesome's fave color is blue!"
