Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! Book Two - Ch. 14 - The Blessing

by Tonja Taylor
10/11/2021 / Short Stories

"Thanks for cleaning the kitchen, Pearl," said her mother.
"Yes, ma'am!" said Pearl. "I think Robert owes me three times now."
"Well, remember, he's still little," said her mother. "But he'll definitely have to help us next."
"Is he still asleep?" said Pearl.
"He's probably playing with his toys by now," said Burt.
But that's good, so he won't interrupt the Blessing! thought Pearl. "Thanks for breakfast," said Xi, and turned to go upstairs. Vivace started to follow her.
"No, Vivace!" said Pearl. "Come here!"
"At least the dog likes me. And you guys, of course!" said Xi.
"We don't just like you, we love you!" said Pearl.
     Xi didn't say anything.
"Miss Xi, will you please come back down and let us bless you?" Burt said.
"They do this every morning," Pearl said. "That means they pray over us. They say the Word of God--you know, Bible verses."
     "Oh," Xi said.
She doesn't look too happy, thought Pearl. But it's always good when a true person of God blesses us!
"It's OK, Darlin', you know we're here to help you," Burt said gently to Xi. "Let's all hold hands, and we'll do a quick blessing. It's something we do every day, unless we're apart, then we call or text and share Scriptures we believe God put in our heart for that person."
Xi nodded. She didn't speak, but joined hands with them.
They bowed their heads, and Burt prayed. "Father, we thank you for this day, and that You always bring good out of bad, like Your Word says in Genesis 50:20. I ask that You do what You said in Numbers 6:24-26: bless and keep all of these ladies and Robert too; turn Your face to them and be gracious to them; lift up Your beautiful face to them and give them peace--Shalom. In Jesus' name, amen!"
"Shalom--I think I heard that once," Xi said quietly. "Thanks." She headed up the stairs.
They heard a yell. "Hey, who are you?" Robert said loudly, jumping down the stairs two at a time.
"Robert! Lower your voice!" said his mother. "Walk--one stair at a time!"
Ugh! thought Pearl. But at least we finished the Blessing!
"This is my friend Xi," said Pearl. "She's our new big sister!"
Xi had walked up to the third stair. "Whatever!" she said, turning back to Pearl, but she smiled a bit.
Robert jumped from where he was and landed on Xi, knocking them both down to the bottom, where they fell back against the wall.
     "Robert Scott Williams!"
Ooh! He's in for it now! thought Pearl.
"Sorry, Big Sister!" said Robert. "I was just tryin' to hug ya!" He patted Xi's arm, while she sat on her backside against the wall. He stood up and hugged her neck. "Now I have two sissies!"
"Xi, I'm so sorry! Are you OK?" said Pearl's mother, grabbing her son by the arm. "Thank You, LORD, that You keep all our bones, not one of them is broken!"
"Is that a verse?" asked Pearl.
Her mother nodded. "Yes, Psalm 34-something, thank goodness, and I claim it every day of our lives from now on!" She used her free hand to help Xi get up. "I promise to keep Robert busy while you rest today!"
"I want breakfast!" said Robert, trying to squirm out of her grip.
"At least he apologized and hugged me after he attacked me!" said Xi, starting to get up. She laughed a bit. "Looks like I've been voted Big Sister by both your kids!"
"It won't happen again, will it, Robert?!" His mother leaned down, looked him in the eye, and said sternly, "Now you walk quietly to the kitchen, sit yourself down, and be still. I will put your breakfast on the table. Do you understand me?"
"Can I have my red bowl?" He said, then skipped to the kitchen.
At least he was quiet, although he should have walked ike she said! thought Pearl.
Pearl's mother sighed. "There was a reason we did not rush to introduce you to Robert." She shook her head.
"Gotcha," said Xi. "No problem. I'm gonna get some sleep. And thanks."
"Brush your teeth--oh never mind, Xi," said Pearl's mother. "Sleep well. Sleep all day if you want, Sweetie. You need it! I'll keep Robert downstairs, and we'll be here when you wake up, OK?"
Pearl ran up and hugged Xi. "Wow, Xi, Queen Mother's never told Robert and me that we can sleep all day, that I remember!" She laughed. "Love you, Big Sister! Rest well!"
Xi didn't hug back, but nodded. "You guys are great. Thanks."
"See ya later," said Pearl. "Maybe Uncle Burt will let us ride horses!"
"I don't know how to ride," Xi said, as she walked up the stairs.
"I'll teach you!" said Pearl. "Right, Uncle Burt?"
"We'll see!" he said. "Brush your teeth, Pearl, and get your Bible and notepad, so we can go. I need to tell Risa something."
"Oh, my Bible's in the bedroom," said Pearl, zipping up the staircase ahead of Xi.
Xi came in and got in bed.
Pearl grabbed Bible and notebook. "Gotta take the Sword. It's the Main Thing!" She waved at Xi. "Sweet dreams!"
"Sword? That's cool. You really got a sword?" said Xi, and started to sit up.
"This is it!" said Pearl, and held up her Bible. "Tell ya later. Gotta go learn how to use it better!"
"Sure," said Xi, and pulled the covers over her head. "I may not be awake when you get back. Night!"
"See you, Xi," said Pearl, and shut the door quietly. Lord, please bless her with sweet sleep, like Queen Mother says in Proverbs 3-something! And thank You for my Sword, and The Blessing every day!
