Rules to Live By

by PamFord Davis
3/04/2022 / Devotionals

My family didn’t go to church often. I remember mostly attending Kirkville Methodist at Christmas and Easter time.

I do have a few special memories.

I sang in choir for a brief time, wore a robe too big for me and recall entering from the vestibule with other choir members.

One of my favorite experiences involved climbing stairs way up to the church belfry; there, I pulled a long rope to ring the church bell before services.

Sunday school attendance was rare; yet, one teacher did impact my life. I don’t remember her name or even her face. I’m quite sure she didn’t realize how important she was. She taught children about holy God. I learned that God gave us the Ten Commandments as rules to live by.  (Exodus 20:2-17).

Jesus didn't do way with the Law; He fulfilled it.

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil (Matthew 5:17 KJV).”

Christ clarified the commandments.

“But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets (Matthew 22:34-40 KJV).”
