"Be yourself!" she said.
The very words I dread.
What does she know of me?
Most others, only flaws can see.
"Stand tall and smile more.
""Walk slowly through this door."
"Don't ask, just come this way."
"Listen-up or the price you'll pay!"
Everyone knows what I must do.
Always trying to make me anew.
Acceptable I'm not to anyone.
I want to hide, or should I run?
Rules, rules, everywhere.
Checking out I do not dare.
It's got to end. It's got to stop.
I cannot face another cop.
"Be yourself!" she said.
Didn't she know my dream was dead?
Is it really not too late?
Can I still attain my fate?
Many will become unnerved.
Wondering how I could've swerved.
Truthfully, they do not know.
To them, "myself," I never show.
"Be yourself!" she said.
What's pounding, heart or head?
If she believes, there might be more!
Such a thought I must explore.
The world's not flat, but very round.
Columbus knew, then history found.
The crowds 'round him weren't right.
Alone, he took his dream to flight.
Shouldn't my dreams also thrive?
Do I have the skill and drive?
If God could love me, shouldn't I?
It's time I laugh no more to cry!
Do I know where to start?
Maybe listen to my heart?
"Be yourself!" she said.
No better path, could I be led.
