P.O.W.E.R.* Girl III - Ch. 5 - The Gift of Truth

by Tonja Taylor
9/18/2022 / Short Stories

Risa turned up KLOVE, and Pearl heard one of her favorite Christmas songs playing. Holy Father, You have come and chosen me now to carry Your son…”

"Hey!” said Pearl. “That’s ‘Breath of Heaven’!” I always feel the LORD stirring in me when I hear that! she thought, and sang along. But I offer all I am…For the mercy of your plan….Help me be strong…

Pearl suddenly remembered a plan the LORD had given her. “Everybody make sure your seatbelts are on,” said Burt. “Lucas, would you please help Rob with his?”

 "Yes sir,” said Lucas.

“I can do my own!” said Robert, and clicked his to prove it.

“Wait!” Pearl said. “I need your key to get in and get something God told me to take!”

Burt gave her an extra house key from his pocket, and she jumped out of the truck, and ran back to her room. She grabbed a couple of books, Scripture bookmarks, some candy from the dish, and her Bible.

Then she knocked on her mom’s office door. “God told me to get these and see if we can give them to people in the city,” she said, excited. “May I please have some of your invitation cards for church?”

“Yes, of course! What a great idea, Princess!” She gave her the items, and hugged her. May the LORD put His words in your mouth!”

“Hope you get lots of work done. Love you!” Pearl said, and zipped back out to the truck.

As they headed out the drive, Pearl held up some Scripture cards and church invitations. “Hey Xi, Queen Mother had these where she keeps her important things, like—”

Money!” Xi said, still listening to her music, shades on.

“No, I mean Scriptures and such,” Pearl said.

Xi didn’t say anything.

Burt turned onto the highway.

“Very good, Pearl, to think of others!” said Ms. Sophia. “Right, Robert?”

Robert, still holding her hand, smiled and nodded. “Yay, Sissie!”

Jesus, Can Robert pleeeeeeez just go live with Ms. Sophia? thought Pearl, and giggled. He’s so sweet when he’s with her!

“What’s funny, Pearl?” said Robert.

Risa looked back at Pearl and shot her a smile.

“Oh, nothing,” said Pearl, and grinned at Robin.

“Princess,” said Burt. “I’m proud of you. It’s all about giving, not getting, although when we give out of love, we get good gifts in return, and we get some things just because God loves us and wants to bless us His kids! Christmas is a picture of the true Christian life.”

Robin pointed. “Look guys! The neighbors have Santa bowing to King Jesus! Can you slow down, Mr. Burt? I want to see it better,” she said.

“Hmm. I’ll pull over to the shoulder for just a sec, since it’s not that busy,” he said.

When the truck stopped, Xi sat up, looking at the figure. ““What? Jesus and Santa? I thought they didn’t mix!”

“Xi, there was a real man named St. Nicholas,” said Risa, “who lived a long time ago and gave money to the poor and gifts to the kids in his village.”

“That is correct,” said Ms. Sophia. “My brother is named after him! But my brother is not very like him—”

“Yet!” Pearl said.

“We can hope,” said Ms. Sophia, but she sounded sad.

“We are praying,” Risa said. “Dios will answer.” Burt nodded.

Risa continued. “Xiomara, many believe gift-giving started with St. Nicolas—but we know it really started with God.”

“Yeah!” said Robert, and held up his hand, holding Ms. Sophia’s. “God gave us Jesus, and Jesus gave us Ms. Sophia!”

Everyone laughed, and Burt said, “That’s right, Son. Good job! Xi, you heard it from one who knows!”

Xi didn’t say anything as she leaned back against the seat.

“He’s special!” said Ms. Sophia, and patted him on the leg.

Robert beamed.

Xi scowled. “Well, the Santa thing is hokey anyway. I was so mad when I found out he didn’t even exist!” She hit the seat, and Pearl froze beside her. “There’s no telling how many other lies she’s told me!”

No one said anything for a few seconds, and Pearl saw a tear fall from behind Xi’s shades.

“Ok, Darlin’, we’re going now,” said Burt, and pulled the truck back onto the highway. “Peace to you, Baby.” He turned up the worship music a bit.

“Pray!” Pearl mouthed to Robin, sitting on her other side. Jesus, please give Xi peace, thought Pearl. Thank You for giving me parents who always told me the truth, even if I didn’t like it! Jesus, You are the Gift Who gives us every good thing!

Robert turned around and patted Xi’s shoulder. “It’s OK, big sissie,” he said sweetly. “You are special to Jesus and to me and to us! We say the truth!”

Wow! Pearl thought, and gave him a thumbs up. You are amazing, God! Thank You!

Xi didn’t move.

“You are so special, Roberto!” said Ms. Sophia, and hugged him.

“Way to go, Bub!” said Burt.

Xi sighed, and said, “Yeah, he’s pretty special to me too…” She reached up to pat his head. “You’re the lil bro I never had.”

He smiled back at her.

“God is bringing you lots of good things you’ve never had, Xi,” said Burt. “He loves you, very much.”

“He gave you a better job with Ms. Sophia!” said Pearl.

Xi nodded. “Yeah. Thank you, Ms. Sophia, for hiring me.”

“Thank goodness nothing happened that night God told us to visit you at the store!” said Pearl.

“Yeah,” said Xi. “I was pretty nervous with those stupid big drunks coming in there. They were bullies.”

“God’s angels always watch over us,” said Burt. “He loves you, Xi.”

“You are a good girl,” said Sophia. “A hard worker. And sweet.”

Me?” Xi said. “I don’t think you know me very well.”

Sophia laughed. “I see behind your shades!” she said.

Everyone was silent for a moment.

“Hey!” said Robin. “Let’s get some toys for the Toys for Tots thing, OK?”

“Sure, Sweetie,” said Burt. “Great idea.”

“Hmm,” said Xi, remembering.  “I think the Marines brought me a toy once…years ago.”

“That’s great, Hon,” said Burt. “We do good things, on purpose,”

“’Once a Marine, always a Marine,’ right, Uncle Burt?” said Pearl.

“Right!” he said.

“Wow, you were a Marine and now a cop, Mr. Burt?” asked Xi. “Till I met you, I always thought military people and cops were rude, but you’re a cool guy,” she said.

He sure is!” said Pearl, loudly on purpose. “Uncle Burt is the best!”

“Amen!” said Risa, and patted him on the shoulder.

Her uncle grinned. “Thanks, Princess. God kept me safe, every time! I know how to use a gun and do martial arts on people,” he said, “but always remember that it’s Jehovah Nissi—Jesus your Defender—and His holy angels that really keep you safe!”

He nodded. “Yes, before you call me or 911, call on the Almighty God—Jesus Christ!”
