Secret That You Know

by Olawale Ogunsola

"[20]After the flood, Noah began to cultivate the ground, and he planted a vineyard.
[21]One day he drank some wine he had made, and he became drunk and lay naked inside his tent.
[22]Ham, the father of Canaan, saw that his father was naked and went outside and told his brothers.
[23]Then Shem and Japheth took a robe, held it over their shoulders, and backed into the tent to cover their father. As they did this, they looked the other way so they would not see him naked." Genesis 9.

The above are words in respect of Noah's family. Noah and his household were saved from the destruction that befell the Earth, that is flooding.

Now to the case of Ham, the father of Canaan, who saw the nakedness of his father. Do you know that it was not his seeing it that is important but his reaction to it. After seeing his father nakedness, there are a couple of things he could do.

What are those steps or things he could do?

1. It would have been an honour to himself if he had kept quiet on the issue. No one would know that he had seen his father's nakedness if he had not published it. It would have remained a matter between God, Who is all-seeing,and himself.

This would have remained a secret for life, if possible.

2. Another option before him is to inquire from God for wisdom to cover his father's nakedness. Where did Ham's brothers got their own wisdom? It cannot be anywhere else but from God. They covered their father's nakedness without seeing it.

3. He could have sent one of his brothers inside his father's tent for a different thing entirely during which the brother will see their father's nakedness to cover it.

Ham's sins were two:
The nakedness seen was the first that brought a problem into Ham's life. His father was in his own tent. What was Ham's concern? What was his assignment in his father's tent?
2. Not only that, as if that was not enough, Ham went ahead to publicize it. It was revealed that he told his brothers. He published what happened to his father in "his tent". Using modern language, his father was in his room. Why was Ham there in the first instance?

Although publishing it was wrong. My observation is that the way he presented the matter to his brothers was not polite. He may have done so with reproach. He may have made jest of his father in the presence of his brothers. This might be his final and main undoing.

What gave me this impression? The conduct of people to another person's mistakes or errors. Anytime they find a fault in another person's life, they become champions in mocking him. Little knowing that in one way or the other, they may fall, God forbid, into the same pit, now or in the future.

Beloved, whose nakedness have you seen? Your father's, mother's, or any other person's nakedness? Whatch! Be careful of the next line of action you will take so that you will not sow evil into your future and the future of your children. Do not be a publisher of people's nakedness, most especially that of your father, it is an abomination to see it not to talk of publicising it. Be careful.

What was the final outcome of Ham's action?

The father said,
"[24]When Noah woke up from his stupor, he learned what Ham, his youngest son, had done.
[25]Then he cursed Canaan, the son of Ham:
“May Canaan be cursed!
May he be the lowest of servants to his relatives.” Genesis 9. New Living Translation, NLT.

Do you want this to be your portion in life and the portion of your children after you? Therefore, cover people's nakedness so that you will not reap curses in return.

Let me state it clearly that this piece is not supporting covering evil doers and their evil activities in any form. They are miles apart! Note that all matters discussed related to Noah in his tent and his household. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
