Tips for Staying in Mountain Cabins

by Tonja Taylor

5 If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him.--James 1:5, AMPC

No matter how well-furnished a mountain cabin or "cottage" (which is a whole house) is, you would most likely want to make sure you take these things on your visit, so you don't have to come down from the mountain and drive to the store (Unless you just want to, of course!).

The Word of God! Never leave home without it, and the more you hide in your heart (memorize), the more you'll have with you, and the more the Holy Spirit can bring to your conscious mind when you need it to come out of your mouth, as a sharpened sword against the enemy, and to set things in positive motion for your life, and for the lives of those for whom you pray! Hallelujah!

Paper and pen, or tablet or laptop or phone. When you go to spend time with the LORD, you definitely want a way to capture what He says to you! Don't try to just remember it. Record it somehow.  I keep a daily (or almost daily) journal, and also record specific things the LORD speaks to me on paper. Often, I see those words, and am reminded with exactly what I need to know and remember, at the perfect time I need it (of course. The LORD is the on-time God!)

Drinking water--lots of it, and your own ice This week, I'm staying in a new, bigger place, on top of a magnificent mountain. I'm so glad I brought several big bottles of artesian water to drink, and other bottled water, for me to make tea and coffee, boil with soup mix, etc.

I forgot to buy ice, but the LORD showed me to freeze some smaller bottles of water, then break them up. Although there are ice trays in the freezer, I'm staying away from them, because of potential impurities. (The last time I stayed in a cabin and used the ice, I was fasting, and didn't think about impurities. I chomped on ice and drank water for three days--then had to throw up because of whatever was in the ice.

Later, I discovered that the owners suggested not using it. I should have thought to ask! Anyway, I just take my own now, or make it with store-bought filtered water.)

Never worry about taking too much water. You may wish you had even more! I drink a lot of water every day, and it is, after all, the most important thing every person needs to ingest.

Tissues to blow your nose. It depends on the place you’re staying of course, but personally, I like to use the softer stuff. “Roughing it” means different things to different people. The regular toilet paper to me is, well, for the toilet.

Eyewater. I came to this amazing mountain cottage—by myself (but I’m never alone, because the LORD is always with me, and through the years, I actually prefer to be “by myself” and my dear husband understands that. Hallelujah! He has a mini-vacation by himself, too.), to write on my fourth novel in my P.O.W.E.R.* Girl series, but I forgot my eyewater.

Splashing water from the mountain well is much better than city water, but I still wish I’d packed the eyewater. However, the Grace of God is sufficient.

Several changes of clothes, including undies and socks. Part of my plan was to ignore the usual routine, but then again, part of relaxing and even being with God involves water for me. That includes showers. So, although I may "overpack" with clothes, I prefer to have several changes, to wear fresh clothes every day, since there is no washer and I have a few days left.

Your own organic coffee, tea, and food. Almost always, there is regular coffee and tea supplied at these places, but I much prefer taking my own organic food, including the beverages. I'm sure I could pack lighter, but packing the Light of the Word, and whatever else I want to experience the comforts of home, so I'm not having to take time to leave the mountain and drive to the store (and hope they have what I want in the nearest town) makes a difference to me. I have more time to be with the LORD and write His thoughts!

Your own pillow and/or bedding--including towels and washrags.  I saved money by bringing my own bedding, but did not realize that "bedding" included towels and washrags. Thank the LORD, I put in a couple of rags anyway, and there are a couple of towels supplied to "soak up water spilled on the floor," as they are marked. They work just fine to soak up water from the shower! Besides that, you may (like I do) sleep better with your own pillow.

I know of a minister who is also a pilot, and travels the world preaching. He has his own bed on the plane, so he doesn't have to sleep in a hotel. Smart!

Apple cider vinegar (ACV).  This is a personal preference, but it's cheap and handy for so many things! I'm so thankful the LORD introduced me to it years ago. I forgot to bring toothpaste, so I brush my teeth and floss, then rinse with this. You can also gargle it. You can ingest it directly (It is strong, and many people need to mix it with honey and water, so it won't hurt their stomachs, or eat something with it.), or add it to your water.

ACV helps your body be alkaline, which is the opposite of acidic (where germs like to grow and cause trouble). You can also clean with it, and use it as a disinfectant for your hands. In addition, you can use it as astringent on your face. It is all natural, made from fermented apples.

These are just a few tips I felt led to share. The ultimate wisdom, of course, is to ask the LORD what to take. I think I forgot to do this before I left! Anyway, He is good, and we all are so blessed, and have an abundance. We are not really "roughing it"--we are blessed!

Always remember--and I'm talking to myself, for I've had a tendency through the years to take a lot of work, even spiritual work, as in lots of Word to review and proclaim; lots of writing to do; lots of whatever, to meet goals--that the primary reason for getting away to be with the LORD is just that; to be with Him.

Because I was raised with and have operated in a "performance" mentality for decades, the LORD has had to teach me to rest. After all, as many have stated, we are human beings, not doings. Hallelujah!

Praise the LORD, He loves us because He is Love (I John 4:8), and because we are His precious children (once we have repented of our sins, and received the cleansing holy blood of Christ Jesus, Who died on the cross over 2,000 years ago to pay the terrible price for those sins, that is! John 3:14-17, Romans 5:6-9!), and He will help us!

6 While we were yet in weakness [powerless to help ourselves], at the fitting time Christ died for (in behalf of) the ungodly. 7 Now it is an extraordinary thing for one to give his life even for an upright man, though perhaps for a noble and lovable and generous benefactor someone might even dare to die.

8 But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us. 9 Therefore, since we are now justified (acquitted, made righteous, and brought into right relationship with God) by Christ’s blood, how much more [certain is it that] we shall be saved by Him from the indignation and wrath of God.--Romans 5:6-9, AMPC

You don't have to escape to a mountain cottage to have private time with the LORD. He is with you always, when you have received Jesus Christ, His Son, as your Savior and LORD!

3 The Lord appeared from of old to me [Israel], saying, Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn you and continued My faithfulness to you.--Jeremiah 31:3, AMPC

Ask the LORD to make a way, a place, for you to be with Him in privacy, so you can better hear His voicie and understand His deep love for you even more. He will. He is the Way, the Truth, and the (Zoe--John 10:10) Life!

Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.--John 14:6, AMPC

The bottom line is, whether you travel physically, or just in your mind and spirit, the LORD is with you to guide and help you. He loves it when you purposely take time and effort to draw closer to Him. After all, the relationship with Him is the most sublime and divine you can have. It is always worth it to spend time with the LORD!

The plans of the mind and orderly thinking belong to man, but from the Lord comes the [wise] answer of the tongue. All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the spirits (the thoughts and intents of the heart). Roll your works upon the Lord [commit and trust them wholly to Him; He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will, and] so shall your plans be established and succeed. ...--Proverbs 16:1-3, AMPC
