P.O.W.E.R.* Girl IV - Ch. 07 - Breakthrough For Robert

by Tonja Taylor
5/06/2023 / Christian Living

“Okay, Xi, you’re done,” said Pearl’s mother, “and you can go help Ms. Sophia now.”

Xi grinned. “So my work is counting for P.E. at least, right?” She got up and started putting her materials on the shelf.

“Right, since you didn’t want to do horseback riding or running,” replied Pearl’s mother.

“No ma’am. Animals are all right, but I’m afraid the horses will step on me.”

“Oh Xi, our horses are sweet! Anyway, you ride your bike for exercise,” said Pearl.

Xi waved. “I’m headed for Ms. Sophia’s. Catch you guys later!”

Pearl waved, then turned to her mother. “Queen Mother, can I count my housework for P.E. or something?”

Her mother smiled. “No, Princess, but remember, Xi is really active in her work, with that big house and yard Ms. Sophia has! Anyway, you already get credit for P.E.”

“It doesn’t hurt to ask,” said Pearl, and went back to completing her essay.

“That’s right—it’s good to ask questions,” boomed her uncle, as he walked in the classroom. “Just think, your mother only has a few more months of you guys tormenting her—I mean, taking lessons from her!”

“What’s ‘tormenting’ mean?” asked Robert, as he tore the corner off his worksheet.

“You should know! thought Pearl, and rolled her eyes. She opened her mouth to talk about that, but caught her mother’s gaze. Oops! Sorry, Lord, thought Pearl, that would not be polite. I hope he doesn’t do this at GraceLight!

“’Tormenting’ is when someone does or says bad things to others,” said his mother. “It comes from the devil; like what bullies do, to try to make people scared and feel bad about themselves.”

“Huh!” said Robert, looking mad.  “I’ll beat that bad devil up!”

“Not by yourself, you won’t!” said his mother. “You need your Big Brother  to protect you. Otherwise, the devil will just beat you up!”

          “What big brother?” said Robert.

          “Jesus, silly!” Pearl blurted.

“You are right, Pearl….” Her mother said, with a of correction in her voice, and a stern look.

Gee, you’d think Robert would know that by now! thought Pearl. But I guess I was rude. Sorry, Lord!

Pearl’s mother smiled at her son, and patted him on the shoulder. Then with a serious tone, she said, “Rob, Jesus really is your Big Brother—but not until you ask Him to forgive you of all you’ve done wrong—that’s what sin is—and to come into your heart and save you from that big bully, the devil! It's the devil that's the bully!"

She hugged him, and continued. "Jesus will always be with you, to protect you and talk to you, and He’s the coolest Person!”

Pearl watched Robert. He stared into space for a bit, and a look of determination came into his eyes.

Wow, Lord, You’re working! she thought. He looks like he really understands! “Yeah," she piped up, "then you’ll get to go to Heaven—”

Tears ran down Robert’s face, and he shouted, “I want my Big Brother!” He jumped up and raised his hands to Heaven. “Jesus, please forgive me and come in and wash all the junk away and be my Big Brother Forever, please!”

Jesus! You did it! Pearl thought, and got up and danced around for joy. She looked at her mother, whose face was also wet with happy tears!

Pearl's mother shut her eyes and hugged her son tightly, and kissed him on top of his head.  Pearl heard her singing in the Spirit

Burt went over and gave Robert a high-five. He took him out of his mother's arms, and  hugged him tight. “Now, you’re my little brother in Christ, not just my nephew!” he said, and smiled really big, then hugged Robert again.

“Hallelujah!” Pearl said, and held up her hand to Robert. “High five, smart man!”

Robert high-fived her, and smiled at her.

He looks so peaceful! she thought. Thank You, Jesus! You still do miracles!

“Uncle Burt, let’s go tell Ms. Sophia!” said Robert, trying to wriggle out of his uncle's arms. “Now I know the same Jesus she knows!”

Pearl’s mother smiled, and wiped away happy tears. “Oh, has she been telling you about Him?” she asked. She helped Robert down.

“Yes ma’am,” Robert said. “She’s been telling me she’s going to Heaven soon, and she wants me to be with her and Jesus—and Daddy.”

Wow, God, You’re always working! thought Pearl.

“Yes, son,” said their mother, in a comforting voice. “Your daddy is with Jesus, and now you will be with Him and all of us, when the time is right. But Ms. Sophia has many more years to live—”

“She says King Jesus is coming soon, and we’ve gotta be ready!” he said. “She told me He’s coming on a white horse and doesn’t want to leave me here, ‘cause it’s gonna be really, really bad!” He started to look sad.

          “Right, Bub!” said Burt.

Oh, let’s get positive again! thought Pearl. “Hey, Rob, we’re going to get to see some gorgeous white horses this month—the Lipizzans, like Jesus' horse, only not quite as pretty—right, Queen Mother?”

“I suppose,” said her mother. “Why don’t you get on your phone and look up the Lipizzan performance, and get the dates and costs and such for me, OK?”

Oh yes, I need to remember I can look up stuff on my phone! Pearl thought. This is fun!

“Sure, Queen Mother,” she said. “We can celebrate Robert receiving Jesus by going to see the horses!”

“Hmm, makes sense, I guess,” her mother said, and laughed. “There is definitely a reason to celebrate anyone receiving Christ as Savior!” she said.

“Especially Robert!” said Pearl, and laughed. Surely he’ll be a lot sweeter now—right Daddy God? thought Pearl.  “Hey, Rob, let’s go tell Ms. Sophia and Xi that you got Jesus in your heart!” She turned to her mother. “I think it’s a great time for a break, Queen Mother, and we can count this for P.E., right?”

Her mother smiled. “Sure, Princess. You guys put on your coats and hats, because it's pretty cold.”

They bundled up, and Pearl's heart felt very warm. She and Robert walked outside, and he started to run.

“Hey Rob, wait up for me, OK?”

“C’mon, Sissy!” he said, and didn’t slow down. “I’ve got the best news in the world!”

“You sure do!” she said, and laughed as she picked up speed. “Jesus! You’re the best!” she said, watching her words make vapor in the air. She felt very light, and caught up with her brother. “I love you, Rob Rob!” she said.

“Love you, too, Sissy!” he said. He got faster, and ran all the way up the hill to Ms. Sophia’s and rang the doorbell. As Pearl made her way up the hill behind him, she saw him attack-hug Xi, and almost knock her down. Xi laughed, and Rob ran inside.

Man, it’s cold out here! Pearl thought. But I’m so thankful You saved Him, LORD! She wiped happy tears from her face, and walked up to the door. Her eyes met Xi’s, and Pearl smiled. She hugged her friend, and thought, Now, Jesus, it’s just a matter of time, like Queen Mother says. Xi is next!
