“You better keep your voice down; talkin’ bout Mrs. R Forest.”

“What are you talking about Maddy? Everybody in this whole school knows Mrs. Radcliff is a Christian,” Forest shouted, as he slowly opened his locker.

“Shhhhhhh! Someone will hear you,” she retorted, with a look of worried terror in her eyes, as she slammed her locker closed. “Of all of the teachers in this huge inner city school, she’s the only one and I don’t think we should be drawing attention to that fact,” she continued in her reasoning. “Not the way things are these days anyway!”

“I guess you’re right…..Well whadaya think Maddy? Do you believe in God?” Forest asked in a near whisper.

“Ya know, I never did before…..my family sure doesn’t, but at this point with Mrs. R, seeing and hearing all of her witness…..I do think there’s a God and I do believe in Jesus!”

“Shhhhh!....Now your volume is increasing,” he warned with a nervous grin.

“Opps….Hey, we better get going, Mrs. R’s class is about to start,” Maddy reminded him. “And I’m sure,” she warned, “that there will be a pop quiz today. I just hope I studied my long division enough last night,” she added.

Then, about half way through the class, Mrs. Radcliff collected the tests and leaned up against her desk to address the class.

“I know there are rumors circulating about me being a Christian and I just want to assure you all that I am not afraid that people seem to be getting irate about it. I am aware that my beliefs aren’t exactly popular these days but I am NOT afraid. I know God will protect me and even if I do have to face persecution for my faith…..I just want you all to know that it’s worth going through if that’s what you have to do to stand by your convictions….I trust God and even if I suffer, I will continue to trust in Him because I know there is a reward for me in Heaven for standing by the Truth.”

“You’re really not afraid?” A few students asked in surprise.

“No, not really…..And if any of you ever want to ask me anything….anything at all, please do. I want you to…..And I hope and I pray that you will….I am available every day after class for half an hour, as most of you already know.”

Later that day at home, Maddy felt a desire come over her to try witnessing to her family once more.

“We all understand that you feel that way….You have that Christian feeling,” her mother awkwardly replied. “It’s fine with the rest of us that you feel that way, but keep in mind that dad and I and Audrey and Brennan do not believe that there is anyone looking down on us from heaven,” she concluded, as she turned and walked away.

Then Maddy went back into her room and prayed for her family and her school. “I know that my school is a rough one God….we haven’t had a single day without a fight, sometimes with knives. And the year is almost over with no one caring about our schools violence problem, but please keep your watchful Eye over my school anyway God because there are at least two Christians there, me and Mrs. R….And I’m pretty sure that Forest is coming around, maybe there will even be others……Oh I sure hope so and pray so, In Jesus’ Name.” Then she completed her challenging math homework and fell asleep.

The next day at school, the rumors about Mrs. Radcliff seemed to have spread all throughout the 10th grade and beyond.

“You know that teacher, the 10th grade math teacher…..Mrs. Radcliff? Well I just heard from Claire, Tyler and Eddie that she’s a lesbian,” Maddy overheard a fellow student telling another student.

“Come on NOW, that is ridiculous!” Maddy shouted back and continued on her way.

The two stunned students didn’t even get a chance to respond.

‘So kids are starting to spread lies about her now……. I guess they figure calling her a lesbian would be highly offensive....They just wanna mess with her head. I bet they're tryin' to get her to quit. I guess the best thing is to just ignore it,’ she reasoned, with a degree of doubt, in which her prayers that night dispelled.

Weeks later, new and old rumors continued to circulate, but the kids didn’t believe that she was really a lesbian. “I guess they weren’t dumb enough to fall for that one at least,” Maddy told Forest one day after class.

“They’re obviously desperately trying to slander her good name,” he replied.

Maddy nodded.

As the school year came to a close, Maddy rejoiced that Mrs. R was still believing and teaching and thanked the Lord that she was quite talented and willing to help her learn long division, but saddened that it didn’t appear that any of her classmates were coming to faith in Christ Jesus.

The final day of class, she sat quietly as report cards were being handed out and the party pretzels were being poured into tiny paper bowls, a large group of students, teachers and other staff members began pounding on the classroom door; demanding that Mrs. Radcliff come out into the hall so they could confront her.

So she got up from her desk and bravely turned the doorknob. She turned back and looked at her students as if she was saying goodbye forever, but she didn’t take one step into the hall. They grabbed her clothing as soon as she opened the door and dragged her out into the corridor and assaulted her with their fists, scratched her face and arms, pulled her hair and kicked her legs knocking her to the floor. They called her a freak, as she got up; still stunned and shaky. The students flung open the classroom door and ran to her side, but her assailants had already run off.

Maddy called out to the others. “Whose got a car?”

"I can't believe it! It all happened so fast!" Maddy told Forest.

One of the students offered to drive her to the hospital. Maddy and a few other students went along and a few followed in their cars.

The next day while she was resting and recovering at home, all 32 of her students showed up to see how she was doing.

“You’re an inspiration,” Maddy declared loudly for all to hear.

“I can’t believe you weren’t more seriously injured from those maniacs,” remarked Tyler.

“I’m so glad you’re okay,” said Claire.

Everyone else nodded.

Forest shouted “YEAH!”

Then all the students joined hands and surrounded Mrs. Radcliff and Maddy began to pray out loud for all to hear….And then she addressed her beloved teacher.

“Mrs. R, we don’t have to ask you anything about your faith, not right now anyway….. Of course we all have questions, but we want you to know that because of YOU, your witness Mrs. R, well…..most of us didn’t believe at the start of this school year, but now we are all ready to believe.”

Everyone nodded in conformation and then all of the students felt tears welling in their eyes and all confessed the Lord Jesus Christ.

Mrs. R wept too; many tears of great joy.
