P.O.W.E.R.* Girl V - Ch. 01 - Anticipating Spring Break

“It’s rainging ‘gain!” said Robert, pointing at the clouds through the window. “Why won’t it stop?”

RAINing, Rob—no g, except at the end,” said Pearl. “It’s winter, and I guess it rains a lot here in the cold months.”

“I suppose so,” said their mother. She sighed. “Your dad always liked the rain, but me, not so much.” She looked out the window, then at the brochures spread on the table.

Help me to cheer her up, Daddy God, thought Pearl.  I know she still misses Daddy!

“Neat!” said Pearl, putting Vivace down, and picking up several brochures, and smiling. “I didn’t know there were so many things to do around here!”

“Yep!” Burt said. “Just about anything you’d want to do, that’s meaningful. We can go canoeing and hiking, gem digging, bird and elk watching, ziplining, spelunking—"

“What’s that?” interrupted Robert.

“Going down into a cave and looking around, right?” Pearl said.

“Right,” said Burt, handing Robert a flyer. “Even better than a cave is the glass chapel--beautiful, on top of a mountain—with waterfall and trails—”

“Yes!” said Pearl. “Sorry to bust in again, but please, let’s do that first! Waterfalls are the coolest!”

“Why don’t we do all of these things?” said Pearl’s mother. “I hope Xi will go with us, because I think it would be great for her, but I bet she won’t want to leave Ms. Sophia, and I can’t blame her.”

“I think it would be best for us to go as a family—”

“With Risa and the kids, of course!” Pearl’s mother said. “Now I’m interrupting!”

Burt laughed. “Not an interruption,” he said. “You’re just telling the truth!” He smiled. “Yes, I’ve already talked to them about it, and that’s why we’re planning our spring break around theirs….if you don’t mind.”

“Hmm, brother, I see that you’ve already decided our homeschool spring break for us!” she said, and smiled. “That works for me. It will be great to go with them. I really like Risa and her sweeties, and I have to admit, you’ve made a great choice!”

“The LORD arranged this marriage,” said Burt. “Seriously. Just like yours, ours is arranged by the King!”

Pearl’s mother nodded, but didn’t say anything.

Queen Mother looks sad, thought Pearl. She must be remembering Daddy. How can I cheer her up? “Hey, Queen Mother!” said Pearl. “Will you ride the log ride with me, or climb the tower or mountain with me? How about ziplining? Can you and I go dig diamonds, or play golf frisbee or something?”

“Wow, Princess, slow down,” said her mother, and laughed. “That’s quite a list already!” She hugged Pearl. “We shall see. Maybe we can all do these things together.

It’s good to see her smile again, thought Pearl. Yeah! Thank You, LORD. This is going to be soooooooooooo much fun!

Burt came in. “Brr! The temperature’s dropping, and I think it’s going to snow,” he said.

“Oh, I hope so!” said Pearl. “Oh, I’d better go feed the horses and feed Sorpresa, and put some extra hay in their stall, Queen Mother. Is that all right?”

“Sure, go ahead,” said her mom, pulling her sweater closer around her. “I’m going to make us some hot chocolate. Burt brought a cold breeze in.”

“Yay!” said Robert. “Hot chocolate! Yum!”

“I took care of the other horses,” said her uncle, “but I knew you’d want to see Surprise and little Sorpresa. I put some extra hay in Watchman’s doghouse, too.”

“Great!” Pearl said, and quickly put on her coat and boots, and went to the door. Vivace danced around her feet, and Pearl reached down to pet her. “I’ll be right back, girl. Go lie down!”

The dog obeyed, and Pear walked out the door, where Watchman ran up and put his nose in her hand.

“Good boy,” she said, patting him with her glove. “He followed her to the barn. She left him outside and got some loose hay from the stack for the horses’ stall.

A movement startled her. “Oh hi, Catorce!” she said, spotting the cat. The cat ignored her, and stared at the wall behind Pearl, as if fascinated.

Pearl looked around, but didn’t seen anything. “Hmm. Have fun,” she told Catorce, as she walked toward Sorpresa and her mother.

The mother horse whickered, and moved as Pearl added the hay to the stall. Pearl patted her, and then hugged the baby horse. “You are getting so big!” she told Sorpresa, looking into her sweet blue eyes. She stroked her little neck. “You are going to be a perfect riding horse when you get big!”

Suddenly, Pearl heard Catorce hiss and scream. She walked out of the horse stall, and realized the cat was attacking something. She looked closer, and saw it was a snake!

“Oh my goodness! Good job!” Thank You, LORD! she thought. Like Uncle Burt said, You’ve always got our backs!

She watched Catorce claw it and bite it, and, within a few seconds, the snake’s body was lifeless. Yuck! she thought, walking out the barn door.  Even though it’s dead, I still don’t want to go near it!

She ran into the house and said, “You’re one smart man, to get Catorce, Uncle Burt! Guess what she just killed and protected us from?”

“Hmm, I bet it was a snake, right?”

“How’d you know?”

“Your face!” he said. “I know you hate those things!”

Pearl’s mother wrinkled her nose. “So do I. That cat is a jewel. Be sure and thank Risa for her excellent suggestion!” she said.

“I will,” he said, and smiled. “She has many good suggestions.”

“I trust you’ll continue to feel that way after May, right, brother?” Pearl’s mother teased.

“I’m sure she’ll help me continue to feel that way,” he said, and laughed—just like the LORD helped Jimmy to continue to appreciate your suggestions!”

“You are correct!” she said, and smiled. “The ways of God are mysterious at times!”

Thank You, LORD, for helping us be happy and safe, thought Pearl, and killing all the snakes in our lives. You are so good!
