HEART EXAM

by linzy bruno

Notwithstanding the importance of a physical heart examination, the examination of the soul is of even greater value. God is the only one who can truly know what is in someone’s heart. Some of us come to this realization after trying for years to figure out whether or not certain loved ones are saved. Sure we may see subtle evidences, but sometimes it is impossible to really be certain, particularly for those who choose to avoid the conversation of personal salvation and relationship with God through Christ, which is concerning itself.

But, inasmuch as this lack of conclusion can be drawn about the salvation status of others, there is an effective way to investigate the state of our own souls.

When we first hear about Jesus, we are either filled with excitement over the Good News or choose to keep God somewhere in the recesses of our minds, just in case we ever desire that He serve us.

That seems to be the differentiating factor: those who are genuine, hear the Gospel and immediately desire to serve Him or upon hearing the Gospel choose to think only of ways in which that knowledge may be able to promote them in their endeavors. The immediate fantasy of using God for self-promotion indicates an unfeigned condition of the heart that ought to frighten even the most brazen of souls. God will, however, hear the prayers of the sincere…..

The Bible provides a methodology to put one’s heart to the test of faith.

When God first draws someone to Himself, that person is instantly transformed. There is overwhelming joy that comes and overflows the heart. Then there is profound gratitude in the revelation, having been lost and now found, narrowly escaping eternal damnation, but now afforded a life-changing relationship with God through Christ.

For, the realization that we have a Creator cannot help but cause the heart to overflow! He made each and every one of us! He knitted us in our mother’s womb! Now everything makes sense and all those sleepless nights wondering what life is all about are replaced with an abiding peace. Emptiness, the mundane and meaninglessness is replaced with everlasting joy. Suddenly our hearts long to discover all He has in store for us and all we want is to fulfill the purpose He has for our lives. Life is sweeter than we ever dreamed possible. We are transformed by the indwelling of His Spirit Who changes us from glory to glory in order that we may live pleasingly before HIM. Hallelujah!

This new joy and gratitude then gives way to unprecedented AWE. Never before have we been so moved with emotion, not the emotion of the soul, but of the Spirit. And God is no respecter of persons. He has given us all a will that is free to choose to follow Him or not follow Him. It’s all about ‘whosoever will:’

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16, kjv)

For someone claiming to believe that Jesus Christ is LORD and Savior, one of two things are bound to  happen, that person will either keep the information somewhere safe in the corner of their minds, just in case they want something from Him someday, or that person will experience the most transforming moment of their lives. And if they decide to ignore all He has done; that He willingly laid down His Life and allowed Himself to be tortured and killed in the most painful manner, that person must actually believe that head knowledge is all that is required for salvation, (when even the devil knows God exists, so this is clearly a dangerous notion.) OR, they have rejected the Good News of the Gospel and have no idea what that will mean for them, starting the day they leave this earth, and then forevermore.

Allow me to sound the alarm: Head knowledge is not transforming, and the Holy Spirit does not come and dwell with those with mere knowledge of Him and His reality.

The Holy Spirit comes to dwell only with those who have chosen to love and accept HIM as LORD over their lives.
