P.O.W.E.R.* Girl V - Ch. 06 - Sowing Good Seeds to Get a Good Harvest!

by Tonja Taylor
7/25/2023 / Short Stories

“Race ya!” said Robert, and started zipping up the hill to Ms. Sophia’s house.

“I don’t want to!” replied Pearl, but she started to jog, then slowed to a walk, and saw Robert look back and start walking too.

“We’re supposed to get there together!” she called to him.

“Mama didn’t say that!” he said, and started running again.

Jesus, I know that one day, he will grow up and learn to be polite—right? Pearl thought. She started running again. She caught up and passed him. Hahahaha, she thought, and looked back—just in time to see him trip.

Ouch! she thought, and stopped to help him as he got up. She brushed him off, and tried to hug him, but he was stiff.

“It hurts!” he said. “Stupid rocky road!”

“Rob, it’s not the road’s fault that you fell on it—”

“Hey!” he said, and pointed and smiled. “Look! A baby bunny!”

A tiny cottontail rabbit zipped across their path and disappeared into a bush.

“It’s so cute!” Rob said. “Let’s catch it and take it home!”

“She is—”

“It’s a he!” Robert insisted.

“How do you know?” Pearl said, as she took his hand and started walking again.

He pulled his hand free. “I just know!”

Jesus, she thought, You had little brothers too, didn’t You? So You understand putting up with Rob!

“Catorce would probably eat that bunny, if we took her home,” she said.

Him!” he said, and started running again.

“OK, Catorce would eat him!” she retorted, running again too. Jesus, I know he wants a pet, she thought. Please help him act right at Ms. Sophia’s!

Robert beat her to the house, and ran up the steps and banged on the door.

Gee, he could have just pressed the doorbell! Pearl thought. Jesus, You can do anything. Please help him learn manners!

Xi opened the door as Pearl jogged up, and said, “Hey Robert. What happened?”

He nodded, and hugged her legs. “The road tripped me, but I saw a baby bunny. He was really cute, and I wanted to take him home, but Pearl said no.”

Pearl sighed. “The road didn’t trip him!” she  protested. “I tried to tell him that. Anyway, he didn’t believe that Catorce would eat her,” Pearl explained.

“Him!” Rob said, and pushed past Xi to go to Ms. Sophia.

Pearl rolled her eyes. “Would you like a little brother?” Pearl asked. “He’s free today!” She giggled and shook her head as she walked in.

Xi smiled. “No thanks! Do you guys want something to drink?”

“No, we just wanted to bring these flower seeds to Ms. Sophia, so she’ll have pretty things to look at,” She showed her several packages with brightly-colored blossoms on them. “Queen Mother says they don’t put pictures of seeds on the package, ‘cause what we’re really planting is the flowers!”

“Good thinking,” said Xi. “Makes sense!”

“She has a poster that says, ‘Count not the day by the harvest but by the seeds you plant.’ Pearl said. “It has some purple crocus flowers pushing up through the snow.”

“My favorite color!” Rob said. “I want to have purple flowers—and a drink—please!” Robert said, seeing Pearl’s warning look. “I’m hot, ‘cause we’re getting’ our B.E. today!”

“It’s P.E., Rob—physical education, and P is the first letter,” said Pearl.

“Sounds like a F, not P!” he said.

Ms. Sophia laughed. “He does have a point!” She hugged him again.

Pearl sighed. “I guess I’m his English teacher or something.”

“You do know a lot,” Xi said, and shut the door behind them. “I’ll get you guys some pink lemonade.”

“I want a coke!” said Robert.

“Rob, you’re being rude!” said Pearl. “Say ‘thank you’ for the lemonade, OK?”

“Hmph. OK! Thanks for the lemonade!”

Finally! Pearl thought.  LORD, I don’t think I ever want to be a mother! Not for about 50 years or something!

Ms. Sophia kissed Robert on the cheek. “Here’s my boy! Thank you for visiting me,” she said. She patted the stool next to her. “Here, sit, and tell me what you’ve been doing.” She gestured to Pearl. “You sit too, Princess.”

Xi brought the flower seeds to Ms. Sophia. “This is what they want to plant for you, to make your yard even more beautiful,” Xi said. “I think Burt said it’s too early right now, though; that we need to wait till after Easter, so they won’t freeze.”

“You mean Resurrection Day, when Jesus rose again after three days, when He died on the cross, right?” said Pearl. Never miss a chance to lift up the LORD, like Daddy used to say! Pearl thought. She felt a pang of hurt in her heart. I know He’s with You, Jesus, but I still miss him. Anyway, I know He’s in the ultimate Garden with You!

“Yep! No freezing the flowers!” said Robert.

“Right, smart man!” said Ms. Sophia. She patted his head. “You can help your sister plant them, when the time is right. I will let you decide how we should arrange them, OK?” She handed him the seed packs.

He nodded as he took them, and looked serious. “Yes ma’am…..I think the tall ones should be in the back, so we can see the short ones in front. Or maybe we should just plant the purple ones by themselves, since they are my favorite—and yours, right, Ms. Sophia?”

“You are correct, Robert!” the older woman replied. “Your favorite es mi flor favorito—my favorite flower!”

“Good thinking, Rob,” said Pearl. He must have heard that from Queen Mother.

“Daddy told me that last year,” said Robert quietly. “He said to plant what I want in a garden….”His bottom lip quivered, and a tear fell from his eye. “I wish Daddy was here to help me!”

Bless his heart, Jesus, please give him peace right now, Pearl thought. Forgive me for being irritated with him.

Ms. Sophia hugged Robert, and Pearl went to hug him, too. Xi came over, and put her arms around them all. “Hey!” she said, “It’s a Robert sandwich!”

He laughed, and said, “Will you all please help me plant these seeds?”

“Of course, we will, Rob Rob,” said Pearl. “And Jesus is the Creator, and He knows all things. He will help you too, and these will be the most lovely gardens we’ve ever seen!”

Pero por supuesto!” said Ms. Sophia. “But of course!”

“Yeah, Jesus really likes gardens, right?” said Xi.

“Right, Xi!” she told her.

Ooh, Jesus! Pearl thought, and smiled big. Xi’s getting it, and that’s exciting!

“He may even like my veggie garden that I’m going to plant in the back,” Xi said quietly, as if she were shy about it. “Ms. Sophia is helping me be healthier.”

“Yes!” Ms. Sophia said, and smiled. “We have started little seedlings in the loggia, where they can get lots of light through the tall windows, and then Burt can teach Xi to use the tiller, to make her very own garden of vegetables!”

Xi smiled and nodded. “I’ll share with you guys, too.”

Wow, Jesus, she really looks glad about it! Pearl thought. “Oh, that’s great!” she said, and hugged Xi. I bet your garden will have lots of good stuff!”

“I think I remember your mom saying that, just like in life, if we want tomatoes, we plant tomatoes. If we want kindness, we plant kindness—right?”

“Right!” Pearl hugged Xi tightly. So I’m planting Love-seeds in you, Xi, to produce more Love—God is Love!—in you, Xi! she thought.

“God is so good! He is such a Genius to put the whole plant in one little seed!”

“You are right about that, Princess,” said Xi. “Now, let me show you my garden-to-be!

They waved at Robert and Ms. Sophia, and walked toward the back of the house.  Pearl was very happy. Thank You, LORD, she thought, that You can use the tiny things, like seeds, to do such big things—like heal our hearts!

They walked to the Xi, as she pointed toward her plants. Ms. Sophia said we’ll probably get a device to add more light for them.”

Pearl giggled. “Yes! More light is always better!” Thank You, LORD, she thought, You are turning her darkness into light!
