P.O.W.E.R.* Girl V - Ch. 07 - God Always Makes a Way

by Tonja Taylor
7/30/2023 / Short Stories

“Resurrection Day is the second Sunday in April,” Burt said, looking at the calendar. “Then a month after that, I’ll be very happily married to Risa--the most wonderful woman in the world!”

Pearl smiled. “Yes, Uncle Burt, that’s going to be so neat! I’m still trying to figure out what to get you guys, though.”

“No worries, Princess,” he said, and laughed. “With you and Robin being the girl flowers—I mean, the flower girls—and serving at the reception, that will be more than enough!”

“I’m not being a boy flower!” Robert piped up, banging his fist on the table.

Burt chuckled, but Robert look serious.

“No son,” his mother soothed, after hiding a smile. “Now calm down. You are carrying the rings, remember?”

I hope he doesn’t drop them! thought Pearl. She shot her mother a wondering look, and giggled, as she remembered a funny video about wedding rings being lost.

“They’ll be stitched very lightly to the pillow that you’ll carry,” said her mother to Robert, and winked at Pearl. “That way they can’t fall off, and I’m sure you’ll do a fine job, especially all dressed up in your suit.  Now, please finish your lunch, and we’ll start working on house plans this afternoon, as part of math and science.”

She resumed eating, and Pearl was about to say something, then noticed her mother looked a little worried. Maybe she’s tired or something, or missing Daddy, she thought. Jesus, please give her peace.

Burt sat down to eat. He noticed a list she’d started writing. “Hmm, Charlotte. Looks like you’re planning what to put in storage, right?”

She nodded, and sighed. “Yes. Obviously, our new house isn’t even a blueprint, and I’m just asking God for wisdom on how to fit us all in this place, and still keep loving each other.” She laughed a bit. “I know we already do, but it will be different with all seven of us in the place!”

Jesus, You’ve got this! Pearl thought. Please remind Queen Mother what she’s told me many times; that You knew everything before the world began, and You’ve already got it worked out for our best and Your glory!

“Oh, Queen Mother, we have my harp lesson today right after lunch!” Pearl said, hoping that would help get her mind onto positive things again. “Do you want to hear what I’ve learned so far for the Resurrection Day service?”

“Thank you, Pearl. Yes, I do,” said her mother. She stood to clear the table, and looked at the clock.

“We guys will clean up today, won’t be Bub?” Burt said, and patted Robert on the head.

“Guess so!” Robert said, but didn’t sound very excited.

It’s your turn, brother! though Pearl. Yay! And I get to play for Queen Mother! Jesus, please help me do this right, so it will help her feel better. Thank You!

They took the golf cart up the hill to Ms. Sophia’s house, She greeted them, and started immediately teaching Pearl the next step of the song, “Jesus Esta Vivo", and then “How Great Thou Art”.

This is a little scary, but a lot exciting! Pearl thought. I’m glad Queen Mother is here, and I believe she will feel God’s touch as I play.

Bien echo!” said Ms. Sophia, as Pearl played the focus measures once again. “Now you are ready to play both songs for your mother.” She smiled. “You can do it!”

Pearl started to play, and focused on the LORD. Very quickly, she felt His wonderful Presence. As she played, she looked at her mother, and noticed that her eyes were shut, and she was smiling slightly. She looks peaceful, and like she may be seeing Jesus! thought Pearl. That would be so neat!

She let the last sound fade, saying nothing. Jesus, I know You are helping her relax, thought Pearl. Thank You!

With her eyes still shut, Pearl’s mother nodded, and said softly, “That was excellent, Pearl! I believe you are anointed to play the harp!”

“Si, she is gifted!” Ms. Sophia agreed. “Dios knew we would meet and I would give her a harp and harp lessons!”

“Yes, and thank You so much, Ms. Sophia!” said Pearl’s mother. “You are so kind. I thought Pearl was….a bit foolish, when she told me she wanted a harp and lessons—but then God moved you here!”

“Yes, Dios knows all things!” said Ms. Sophia.

With a twinkle in her eye, Ms. Sophia says, “Gloria a Dios! Now I know what to do with all this extra room on the second story! I was thinking I needed to buy furniture for all of them, but then I thought Why? Who will be seeing the second floor? And now, my dear,” she said to Pearl’s mother, “God through you has given me the glorious answer! You will all move in with me!

She said it so loudly that Pearl and her mother were startled. For a moment, no one spoke.

Oh wow! This is a little scary, but a lot exciting! thought Pearl. Neat, Jesus! You always make a way for us

Pearl’s mother looked confused. She stared at Ms. Sophia for a few seconds, then said, “What—"

“Oh, thank you, Ms. Sophia!” Pearl said, interrupting her mother. “This will be great!”

Robert started jumping up and down. “Yeah!” he said. “We are moving in with you! Yay! I’ll get to be with you more!” He hugged her neck and kissed her check. “You are my favorite person!”

Ms. Sophia laughed. “That will give Ms. Risa and her hugsband Burt and the kids their own privacy—Oh, and let us have Robin and Lucas here for a couple weeks, so the lovebirds can have the house to themselves a couple weeks after they return! Si?”

Pearl giggled. “Ms. Sophia, you are so funny, about Uncle Burt being Ms. Risa’s hugsband! I can’t wait to tell her that, ‘cause they hug so much anyway. And thank you for being so good to us!”

Pearl’s mother came over and took Ms. Sophia’s hand. “Yes, you have…but have you talked to Burt about this?”

“Si, it’s all taken care of,” said Ms. Sophia, and laughed again. “And anyway, he has to do what I say—it’s my house!”

Ms. Sophia looked at Pearl, Robert, and their mother. “Why don’t you start moving in today?”

“Ah…well, I…” Pearl’s mother said, “We’ve got to finish lessons for homeschool today, Ms. Sophia.” She sighed, smiled, and then started talking rapidly. “Are you sure you want us to do that? Is there enough room? Should we have Burt help us bring all the furniture? What else—”

“Relax, dear,” said Ms. Sophia, and squeezed her hand. “I will be happy to hire a moving company for you. Just tell me which one.”

“You don’t have to do that, Ms. Sophia,” protested Pearl’s mother. “You are more than generous—"

“It is no problem,” Ms. Sophia said, firmly. She smiled really big, then laughed loudly. “You know I always get my way, so I insist! Now I know much more why Dios told me to get such a big house!”

She chuckled. “See, I kept telling Him that I only needed a small house, since it was just me. But He Who knows all things knew that first, Xiomara would become my foster child and need to live here, and then He showed me that all of you need to live on the second floor, so there is no rush until your new house is finished! He is good, all the time! Gloria a Dios!”

Pearl laughed and felt happy tears.  Jesus, help Queen Mother be comfortable with this! This will be so great! she thought. Thank You!

She looked at her mother, who also had happy tears. Her mother smiled and nodded.

Thank You for another way You are making Queen Mother’s happy, LORD, Pearl thought, feeling great peace in her heart. You always know all things, and go ahead of us, and make it all so good, dear Daddy God! I love You!”
