P.O.W.E.R.* Girl V - Ch. 08 - God Anoints Pearl's Harp Music at the Resurrection Luncheon

by Tonja Taylor
7/31/2023 / Short Stories

Wow, here I am, Jesus! Pearl thought, as she softly strummed her harp and looked around at the many people in the fellowship hall. I’m so glad all these new people came, so they can taste and see that the LORD is good, like Queen Mother says!

She admired the lovely décor in the room, from the white lilies gracing the tabletops, to the silver dishware and sparkling balloons, and the white and silver banners proclaiming that “CHRIST JESUS IS RISEN INDEED!” on every wall.

White for purity, and silver for redemption, Pearl thought. So lovely!

Pastor Randy’s wife, Mrs. Melissa, worked with her teenagers, along with Burt and Risa, Robin and Lucas, and Xi, bringing out drinks and hors d'oeuvres to the guests.

Pearl’s mother came over with Robert. “That is beautiful, Pearl,” she said. “Thank You so much for doing this. I can feel God’s peace already, and I know He will be touching all these souls. I pray that any of them that don’t know Christ will come to know Him today!”

Pearl nodded. “Yes ma’am!” Jesus, she thought, please help me to praise You with this harp and play skillfully, like You say in Psalm 33!

Robert reached out and touched the top of her harp. “Pretty,” he said, and smiled. “Good job, Sissy!”

Pearl smiled at him, and felt compassion for her little brother. Please touch Rob’s soul too, LORD! Heal his little heart, and help Him know that You are His eternal heavenly Daddy, she thought. And Jesus, please tell my daddy that I love him and wish he was here! She felt a wave of sadness. Be brave, Pearl! She told herself. This is not about you, but about others, like Queen Mother says!

“Attention, please!” Pastor Randy said in a loud voice. “I want to everyone for coming to our first Resurrection Day Community Luncheon. If any of you were with us for our Resurrection Service this morning, thank for coming, and let me introduce myself. I am the pastor of GraceLight Church, and am so thrilled to have you all. You are welcome any time. We will love you just as you are, and teach you the Truth, for like you heard this morning if you were here, John 14:6 says, Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father but by Him.”

He smiled, and said, “I also want to thank those in our church body who are cooking and serving this delicious meal.” He clapped, and the crowd clapped with him.

When the clapping stopped, he said, “There is one other special person I want to thank.” He pointed to Pearl. “This is Pearl Williams, and this is her first time to play her harp in public.” He smiled at her. “I have felt the peace deepen in this place since you started playing, Miss Pearl. Thank you for sharing your anointing!”

He clapped and the crowd clapped too.

Pearl blushed, and kept playing. She smiled and nodded as everyone looked at her. She saw her mother beaming, and her Uncle Burt gave her a thumbs up. Wow, she thought. I have an anointing? I thought that was just for adults! This is a little scary, but a lot exciting! Thank You, Jesus, and may they feel Your Spirit!

“Now, let’s all bow our heads, and I will bless the food,” said the pastor.

A moment later, the servers started bringing out the food, and the crowd’s attention turned back to the tables. Thank goodness! she thought. Now they’re not looking at me!

She started playing again, simple versions of hymns that she had asked Ms. Sophia to teach her, such as “How Great Thou Art” and “Jesus Loves Me.”

Some of the guests started singing along, and Pearl felt the Presence of the LORD even stronger.

Thank You, LORD! she thought, full of joy. You are truly working through me to help them experience You!

The servers brought out desserts, and soon, some of the kids got up and came over to Pearl.

“Wow!” one young girl said. “I’ve never seen a harp before! This is cool!”

The girl’s father said, “You are very talented, young lady, and you’re inspiring Arianna. Now she wants a harp!”  He pointed to a little dark-haired girl at the table with her mother . “She’s only five, but already gifted in music.”

“That’s wonderful!” Pearl said. “If I can learn to play, so can she. Ms. Sophia is a great teacher!”

He nodded and handed her a $50 bill. “I to give you this to help pay for more lessons—”

“Oh, but she’s teaching me free!” Pearl protested.  She looked over and saw that his wife and little girl were looking at her. They smiled and waved, and the woman nodded.

“The LORD told my us to bless you, and we plan to visit this church again! We’ve been out of church a few years, but I’m so glad some of you guys invited us,” he said. “If you don’t need the money for lessons, then buy something to help take care of the harp, or whatever you need.” He patted her shoulder. “You are a Blessing, and you may play in a world-famous orchestra one day!”

“Thank you!” Pearl said, still strumming. She looked through the crowd to see if her mother or uncle had seen the man bless her, but they were busy serving and talking.  Neat! she thought. Thank You, Jesus! After I tithe, what should I do with the money? Ms. Sophia already has all the stuff to take care of the harps. Then she had an idea. Yeah!  I can give the whole $50 for an offering toward the mission trip to Mexico! You’re so sweet, Daddy God. You knew I was wanting something to give! Yeah!

Pearl saw Ms. Risa carry strawberry cheesecake to the tables next to her. Mmm, she thought. Her stomach growled. I didn’t know I was hungry, till I saw dessert!

Someone tapped her on the shoulder, and she looked but didn’t see anyone. She looked the other way, and there was a big hand holding a fresh blueberry cheesecake, right in front of her.  She heard her uncle’s deep laugh. “You must be hungry, Pearl girl!” he said. “Your worship is beautiful, but rest a while and enjoy the dessert! You can eat it first, then chase it with protein, like your mama says.” He laughed and hugged her. “You’re doing a great job, and I’ll bring you the plate of protein in a bit. It’s chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans.”

“I know it’s good, if you helped cook it, Uncle Burt!” she said, taking the cheesecake from him and digging in. “Well, I saved you a blueberry, ‘cause I know you like that even more than the other kinds,” he said. “Be right back!”

Yum! Thought Pearl. This is delicious—this special time, and the cheesecake too, Daddy God! She ate a few more bites.

She looked around and saw that most people were through eating. Several of them came over to thank her for playing, and compliment her.

“How did you get started playing the harp?” one woman asked her. “I thought they were all huge, but I see you have a lovely small one.”

“Yeah! It’s cool!” one teenage boy said. “Is that like what King David played?”

“My teacher gave me this, and she said it’s a Celtic harp. They are smaller,” Pearl replied. “God just dropped the idea in my heart one day, and then He had Ms. Sophia move here to give me the harp and lessons!” Pearl said.

“Wow, that’s awesome!” said the boy. The woman nodded.

“Yes, God is awesome!” said Pearl.

“You got that right!” said Burt, handing her the plate of lunch. “I see you polished off that cheesecake!” He laughed. “Playing a harp can make a girl hungry, huh?” He pointed to a nearby table. “Why don’t you eat there, and I’ll carry your harp over there with you.”

He carried the harp and got her settled. She started eating, and heard someone walk up behind her.

“Little Miss,” the older man said softly, “I just want you to know that I had quite a bit of back pain when I came this morning. The service was very good, and I went up for prayer. My back felt better, but it still hurt. However, when I heard your beautiful music flowing in the room, I started singing along—and the pain is all gone!” He touched his back, and smiled big. “I think God healed me!”

“Wow, that’s great, Sir!” said Pearl. She jumped up and said, “Praise the LORD! Jesus is the One Who heals us!”

He nodded, and Pearl’s mother came over. The man told her what he’d told Pearl, and she nodded. “thank You, LORD!” she said, and hugged Pearl. She smiled down at her. “Look, Precious, what the LORD has done to bless your obedience!”

Risa overheard and came over. She gave Pearl a high-five. “Hallelujah! Way to lift up the LORD, Princess!”

“Burt my love!” called Risa. “Pastor Randy! Ven aqui! Come here!” She looked around. “Where are the kids?”

Burt kissed her on the cheek, and said, “They’re doing a good deed—washing dishes.” he said.

Pastor Randy looked at the smiling gentleman. “You obviously have good news!”

The man nodded. “Yes Sir. I believe God healed my back—from hearing this young lady’s harp music.”

The pastor’s eyes gleamed. “I knew it, little one!” he said. “God is in the healing business, and you are a channel for Him to work, with that harp. Miracles can be spectacular, but most often, the LORD works quietly, like he did for this man. Look what the LORD has done!”

He grabbed Pearl’s hands and pulled her up.  Risa and Pearl’s mother grabbed Burt’s and the older gentleman’s hands, and they all made a circle and danced around a little bit, laughing and rejoicing in the LORD.

The people who were still there watched, some curious, some smiling.

Hallelujah Jesus! Pearl thought. Neat! You are the LORD Who heals us! Thank You for letting me be part of Your work!
