A Leadership Blunder

by Olawale Ogunsola
9/21/2023 / Leadership

A leadership position is a delicate position. One of the reasons for this is that every act of a leader has an immediate and direct effect on him, his position, and his followers.

If any of his followers commit wrongdoing, such a fellow can be identified and corrected, if need be, some corrective measures can be applied to him.

A leader cannot easily be handled like that. Most of the time, a leader is accountable to the Lord. It is not that his followers cannot identify his mistake but most of the time, they may not be able to tell him. Anyone bold enough to do so may be sanctioned in one way or the other. If he is not sanctioned, his words may be rejected by the leader, thus rendering his efforts useless. He is bound to resign to fate.

One thing that cannot be denied is that a leader's blunder has a direct effect on his followers.

An error from a ruler brings evil to the ruled.

Most of the time, the lead may not know the source of the evil that befalls them. Yet, they have to bear the consequences.

This was the case with King David, the second king of the nation of Israel.

The Lord did forbid census in the country but the King was stirred up to count the people. He wanted to know the population for "proper planning and administration" against the plan or interest of God. When Joab, the commander of the army at the time was instructed to do the counting, he objected by reasoning with the King but the words of King David prevailed.

Joab reluctantly carried out the King's instructions but there was a grave consequence. What was it? The Lord was angry and he gave the king three evil things out of which he must choose one that will befall him and his people. He wisely chose to fall into the hands of the Lord because He is merciful. He knew that in judgment, He remembers mercy.

The king realized his blunder and regretted it but this could not prevent the consequences from taking place.

In all these, seventy thousand people were killed by pestilence. When the eyes of the King were opened to see the Angel of destruction, he lamented. He preferred the judgment to be melted to him directly instead of the innocent people of God.

At the end of the day, the Lord manifested His mercy by accepting a sacrifice from the King and the destruction ceased.

Beloved, can you see that a leader needs to be very careful? A single error or blunder can bring great evil to the follower(s). May the Lord help all leaders to obey Him totally in Jesus' mighty name. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
