Mom Folded Dish Towels Today

by Tonja Taylor
11/10/2023 / Relationships

18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. 19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. 20 God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.--Ecclesiastes 5:18-20, NLT

Almost every person feels better when they are accomplishing things. This is true for elderly disabled people as well, like my dear, widowed, very crippled, 81-year-old mother.

I washed today, and was inspired to ask if she wanted to fold the towels. She did, and was excited to do so. With her hands so crippled and twisted from rhematoid arthritis, I was surprised that she could do it so quickly, but so glad I'd asked her.

This woman who'd been such a go-getter, such a leader and doer for decades, had suffered many things, and almost died a few times, especially since Dad had passed to Heaven over 6 years ago.

After months of prayer between my husband and myself, we knew a big change was coming up. However, it wasn't until Mom fell once again and had to go to the hospital, with fractured ribs, that it was clear to me--we were to move in with her, into her 50-plus-year-old house that she and Dad built, so she would not have to go to a nursing home, and could have a better quality of life with our aid.

It's been quite a journey, but the LORD has been restoring some things in our relationship (which has been loving, but pretty rocky through the years, for various reasons), and she's truly needed our help. She can barely get up with her walker to go to the bathroom, and otherwise, she just sits in her stuffed chair, with her diseased legs elevated, and watches movies and documentaries. Bless her heart!

She believes in God healing through the medical community, but not really through the Word. However, she has let me start praying over her on occasion, and read a few Scriptures I gave her, for a couple of days.

Some is better than none, for the Word of God is a seed.

And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear and accept God's word and produce a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred times as much as had been planted!--Mark 4:20, NLT

So, I have not always walked and talked in Love toward her, and moving back in with my mom is something I never thought I'd do. However, when the LORD dropped that instruction into my heart a couple months ago--and gave me the picture of the walls being broken down and the gates burned with fire, like Nehemiah speaks of, when he feels a deep need to go lead the people to rebuild the wall; to rebuild their lives--I knew it was right. I also had deep peace and joy that can only come from God, a sure confirmation from Him that it was His leading.

Of course, when we obey, it's always a win-win, although there may be challenges along the way. The LORD is using this to draw me closer to Himself, and reveal things to me that I need to change, to become more like Him. Hallelujah. May Mom and others see more of Christ in me!

God is with us, and will never leave us. He is so faithful to put His amazing Grace all over things, and is always doing Genesis 50:20 and Romans 8:28, as much as He can (for He is limited only by our faith, which involves our words and actions)! Hallelujah!

You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.--Genesis 50:20, NLT

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.--Romans 8:28-29, NLT

So if you are caring for a loved one who is disabled--no matter what the age--then let them do as much as possible, without doing things that would harm them.

Even something as simple as folding dishtowels could encourage them, and give them hope that they are useful and productive, which all to often (unfortunately) translates into being loved in this perverted world!

Ask the LORD for wisdom to help you let them be productive, and become more confident. He is faithful, and He will help you!
