5 WAYS TO SIDE-STEP PERSONAL INTERPRETATION OF SCRIPTURE

by linzy bruno
12/02/2023 / Bible Studies

“But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (1Corinthians 2:10)

God’s Word says that ALL Scripture was given by Him, therefore, we do not have to use our own logic or personal opinion to understand the meaning of His Words. Furthermore, our own opinions and personal perspectives can actually get in the way of our understanding of the Truth.

All Scripture was given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2Timothy 3:16-17)

Number 1). Most critical--Pray for Holy Spirit discernment. God will open up the meaning of Scripture for those who seek His Wisdom:

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” (John 14:26)

Number 2). Let Scripture interpret Scripture. Through the study of God’s Word, believers can come to a more complete understanding of what God is truly communicating to us. This practice confirms and reaffirms the meaning behind the words of our Bibles.

This can accomplished in a couple of ways, through:

--Parallel verses confirm

--Other relatable Scriptures reaffirm

--Prophetic fulfillment—Old Testament to New—confirms and reaffirms

After His Resurrection, Jesus reappeared before His disciples and they were afraid. But He brought them great comfort. He reminded them that the Old Testament Prophecies had been fulfilled in the New Testament, as foretold in the Scriptures. This connection factor validates the factual, dependable Truth of Scripture, and further reveals and reaffirms what is being communicated to believers.

Number 3). Focus on allowing the meaning to shine through. Difficult as it is, we can strive to take a mental side-step. Through determination, this practice will give way to more profound revelation.

Everyone may have his/her own special connection to certain verses/passages, through an experience with God and/or other connecting memory. However, the danger enters in when we assume, jump to conclusions, forget to confirm the meaning, or allow our own logic to overshadow the true meaning. But, providing we remain determined to embrace every point; those that apply to all—the general big picture, as well as any sub-points illustrated through the verses, we will not become vulnerable to taking God’s Word out of context.

For example: When Jesus walked on water, as recorded in Matthew 14:22-33. The symbolism of His Omnipotence is crystal clear. Jesus can do anything. Nothing is too hard for Him! This is the meaning of the Scripture. God can do anything and glorifies Himself through miracles, so that we may stand in awe of HIM. A sub meaning is to trust Him and not be afraid. If He is with us, we are surely safe; nothing bad can happen unless He allows it.

Number 4). General Bible study. Regular, daily reading.

Number 5). Find/search out/seek sound Biblical teaching: at church, online, or other written materials that have passed the Bible-alignment test.

“So, I say to you, ask and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks will receive, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.” (Luke 11:9-10)
