LET THERE BE LIGHT

                                My Christmas story

Freelance writer Lupie Riley

Thought: “Then God said, “let there be light” Gen.1:3 Many years later after Creation a different light came into the world in the form of a human baby.  Who was that light?  John 1:4,5 “Eternal life is in him, and this light gives light to all mankind.  He is the light that shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

There are three kinds of people that have their opinions about this second light.  We have the skeptic who questions whether there is a God then the agnostic who denies who he is but acknowledges the possibility of his existence.  Then there’s the atheist who deny God entirely.  There are also those who take God at his WORD and believe who Jesus is and accept him into their lives.  Those people are called Christians.

Joseph and Mary did not make a huge announcement of Jesus birth.  Mary placed the newborn baby in a rock hewn manger that was a feeding trough for the animals that surrounded them. Privately and humbly, Jesus was born that night in a little town called Bethlehem. This babe in the manger was to face an excruciating death on a wooden cross as an adult. This sinless child was to be the sacrifice for the sins of all mankind.  In early temple worship pure lambs were sacrificed for the sins of the people.  As a man, Jesus was called the lamb of God.

Mary wrapped her baby in swaddling clothes that could have been the very cloth that the shepherds whipped down the sheep before they were taken into the temple foreshadowing what was to happen with Jesus.  At Jesus death he was wrapped in a long linen cloth that is still in existence today kept in a safe place in Turin Italy.  Scientist have studied this cloth, but modern technology has discovered the coins that were placed on Jesus eyes at the time of burial are dated to the time of his resurrection.  The radiation that was expelled when he arose from the grave was so powerful it created a picture of a man on the cloth. It was the image of a crucified man that fit all the descriptions of wounds that were in the right place.  It was an actual photograph of the God/man Jesus. Archeologist everyday unveil more evidence of Christ’s existence.  How can we not acknowledge that there was truly a God/man who left his lofty throne to put on the flesh of mankind and be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, like the pure lamb of old.

Col. 2:9,10 “For in Christ there is all of God in a human body: so, you have everything when you have Christ, and you are filled with God through your union with Christ. He is the highest Ruler, with authority over every other power.”  Col. 1:15,16 “Christ is the exact likeness of the unseen God.  He existed before God made anything at all, and in fact, Christ himself is the Creator who made everything in Heaven and earth, the things we can see and the things we can’t: the spirit world with its kings and kingdoms, its rulers, and authorities; all were made by Christ for his own use and glory.”

That child born that night in Bethlehem was not just a normal human baby.  He was the Creator and Savior of the world. The Angels had a reason to celebrate his entry into humanity.  When we sing those familiar Christmas carols, listen closely to the words, and celebrate the birth of our Savior and coming King.  He’s promised to come back and take out his own before judgment falls upon the world.  It’s a simple decision to be part of this event.  I call it the 3 CCC’s.  Confront your final destination, Confess your need of forgiveness and Commit your life to Christ the rest of your days.

Prayer:  Father God, help me to shine the light of Jesus in me so that others can be drawn to your light and receive the gift of forgiveness and eternal life you offer through your sacrifice on the cross.  Amen

Verse:  Rev. 3:20 “Look! I have been standing at the door (of your heart) and I am constantly knocking.  If anyone hears me calling him and opens the door I will come in (spirit) and fellowship with him and he with me.”
