7 Effective Ways to Rest Your Mind, Body, and Spirit

by stephanie reck

When we think of rest, most of us think of taking a nap or sleeping more; while these are forms of rest there are other effective ways to get rest.

Over the last several weeks I have had more than usual added activities and different distractions. I have been feeling mentally and physically tired. I realized in my quiet time with the Lord that I needed to rest my mind, body, and spirit. There are certain people and circumstances that can deplete us more than others, and we need to be aware of when we feel drained so that we can take the necessary steps to feel rejuvenated.

Listed below are 7 effective ways that you can rest your mind, body, and spirit:

1. Recharge your spirit by getting alone, quiet time with God. Go alone somewhere and be with the Father. Don’t bring your phone or other electronic device with you, but a journal, and your Bible, and turn on some soaking worship music. Just sit in the presence of the Lord. Stillness and quietness bring peace to our spirits. You may have to get up earlier to find this time, but it will be worth it!

2. Use your mouth to declare out loud over your circumstances and your life what you want to see happen. Don’t open your mouth and spew out negativity, but instead use your mouth to declare blessings, life, peace, and rest. Here are a few examples you can use, but tailor your declarations to your situation: I am energized in God’s presence. The joy of the Lord is my strength. I am surrounded by God’s peace. My mind is at rest because I trust God.

3. Go out in nature, look at the beauty of God’s creation, get some sunlight, and walk. Do all the above or even just one to elevate your mood and calm anxiety.

4. Take a break from social media and break away from your phone. Shut your phone off or place it in another room as often as needed! That’s right, as often as needed unless you are using your phone for work, but you still need breaks from work.

5. Take short breaks throughout your day and have a cup of tea, coffee, or even water. Take those times to connect to nature or to be still and quiet. Go outside, sit at your desk and look out the window, or just sit quietly and allow your mind to rest.

6. Step away, and disengage from what has depleted you. You may need to place boundaries in place to protect your mental health. Take as much time as you need to regain your strength by practicing self-care. Self-care is not selfish!

7. Train your mind to focus on what is peaceful and what is a good report. Be intentional in thinking about those things that are uplifting and turning away from what is not.

Life Coaching Corner:

Give yourself permission to rest your mind, body, and spirit. You know when you are feeling drained, and need some extra TLC. Be good to yourself! Don’t damage your body and mind by not taking care of yourself when you need to. There is no need to apologize or justify to anyone why you are choosing to rest. Even adults sometimes need a time-out. Life can be extremely harsh, and I believe that God allows us time to refresh and restore from the hard times.
