1 Corinthians 13:7
Love… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

“Your marriage needs to be a love triangle,” said Reverend Dave Waterson, the dear Baptist pastor who married Karen and me. “There needs to always be three people in your marriage – you, Dudley, you, Karen and Jesus. Jesus needs to be the head of your marriage as long as you live. If you take your eyes off Jesus and become fixated with one another, your marriage will fall apart,” he added. Now, 41 years later, Karen and I continue to walk in a three-part marriage – wife, husband and God.

Through the years I have discovered that this love triangle is imperative to a lasting and successful marriage. It’s true, that a triangle comprises three angles and in the triangle of a Christian marriage, Jesus needs to always be the top angle of the relationship. However, in my experience, this so-called, love triangle comprises three sides: the left side, the right side and the base. In my triangular marriage, Jesus is the base. If the two sides remain tethered to the base, they will always be secure. If they separate from each other yet remain attached to the base, they will always fall back together again. If they separate from the base they will flounder about aimlessly and potentially fall apart. This is why it is essential, young people, to always keep your eyes on Jesus and keep your heart soft to one another.

Three is a biblical number. The number three represents God. God is Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It’s no coincidence that a triangle has three sides. Therefore, to build your marriage as a three-part relationship is to acknowledge the Triune God in your union. God-tracking requires acknowledging God in all your ways. If you acknowledge God in your marriage through prayer and confession then he will direct your paths together for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer and in sickness and in health. Acknowledging God is to acknowledge that he is the base of your love triangle. And, indeed, he loves you both!

God-tracking is a love triangle.

SO, DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK UP & PRAY

“Help us to remain tied to each other in love and commitment, through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, as we base our marriage on You.”

“Dear Father, I acknowledge you in all my relationships. I acknowledge you in my friendships, my family, my colleague relationships, my church relationships and, especially, in my marriage. Jesus, I confess you are the base of my marriage. We build our relationship upon you. I confess today that there are three people in this marriage: me, my spouse and you, Jesus. Help us to remain tied to each other in love and commitment, through thick and thin, in sickness and in health, as we base our marriage on You. Amen.”
