THE HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY OF FREE WILL

The Parable of the Guests is a short, but poignant story that deals with the matter of salvation, as so many of Jesus’ Parables do. Jesus uses a master to represent Himself, a servant to represent the believer and the guests to represent the unsaved.

Upon inviting many guests, in which Jesus makes mention of without description, the invitation is clearly for all who accept it, which means whosoever comes to the Throne of God through Christ in Truth will be saved:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)

Furthermore, the anger that the master expresses toward those who made the excuses, ought to point the believing mind toward the matter of God’s Wrath. Furthermore, He has made Himself known to them, which mirrors the ‘no excuse’ stipulation of the parable:

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.” (Romans 1:18-19)

The master of the house became angry when each one made his own excuse not to come and join the festivities of the occasion. And even more poignantly, being that the master symbolizes Jesus in this parable, the responsibility of free will is clearly discerned and the revelation of it ought to come in the form of great and ominous warning regarding the eternity of our souls, of which there can be no parallel, for the state of our eternity will never end. The choice we make now, whether to believe on Him or reject His free offer will not only affect us for all eternity, it may even affect the future of our children, for we have no means to any certainty of their learning this revelation of Christ if not for our parental guidance and example.   

This naturally fills the believing heart with such great spiritual burden for all those, known and unknown, but especially our children who use their free wills to damn themselves unto eternal condemnation.

This parable also outlines the limited time of God’s highly specialized offer:

“Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)

Perhaps another lesson we can gleam from this simple and short, but profoundly poignant parable is how God feels when His free gift is rejected by so many to whom He has been so kind and generous, patient and understanding.

It is also poignant to note that there is a verse in the Book of Revelation that illustrates this same Statute; one resembling the same great eternal significance.

“Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me,” (Revelation 3:20)

Another similar verse that parallels this Truth is found in Romans 11:15, which says:

“For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead?”

And what about God’s depiction of choice in Deuteronomy?

“I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Truly, the free will God provides is one of great responsibility, both for ourselves and our descendants.

Through the critical message of the Parable of the Guests and many other passages of Scripture, God has provided an open door, through which there can be no excuse. And this Truth points the believing mind to another parallel verse in Romans:

“For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”  (Romans 1:20)
