The Tunic

by PamFord Davis

Adam and Eve tried to cover their guilt and shame. “Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves waist coverings (Genesis 3:7 NASB).

They foolishly thought they could hide from God.

“Now they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Then the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, ‘Where are you?’  He said, ‘I heard the sound of You in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid myself.’ And He said, ‘Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat (Genesis 3:8-11 NASB)?”

God provided a covering.

“And the Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them (Genesis 3:21 NASB).”

Jesus bore our sin, guilt and shame. Nakedness was a part of Roman crucifixions.

“Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His outer garments and made four parts: a part to each soldier, and the tunic also; but the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.  So they said to one another, ‘Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to decide whose it shall be.’ This happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: ‘They divided My garments among themselves, and they cast lots for My clothing.’ Therefore the soldiers did these things (John 19:23-24 NASB).”

Roman soldiers gambled for Jesus’ tunic (His undergarment). Onlookers saw no loin cloth on Jesus.
