Wings of a Dove

I was standing in front of my kitchen sink and glanced out the window. There, I noticed two birds out in the lawn; at first, it was nothing out of the ordinary. I'm not a birder and normally recognize only robins, red birds and blue jays. My attention first went to a blue jay but was diverted to a redheaded woodpecker.

I’ve seen them before on trees and power poles; the woodpecker seemed out of place there on the lawn. It seemed like the perfect photo opportunity. Sadly, it had flown away by the time I returned with my camera. Though disappointed, I realized there was a meaningful lesson in the sighting. Like birds, at times we might all wish we could fly away.

"David said, 'If only I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and find rest. How far away I would flee; I would stay in the wilderness. I would hurry to my shelter from the raging wind and the storm (Psalm 55:6-8 HCSB)."

Another bird sighting comes to mind.

A pair of mourning doves lighted in the front yard of our Alabama home. Rejoice; God sent His Holy Spirit on the wings of a dove!

“When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As He was praying, heaven opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven:

You are My beloved Son.
I take delight in You (Luke 3:21-22 HCSB).”
