Naming the Savior

by PamFord Davis

Names held significant meaning in Bible times; some even held prophetic importance. The New King James Version explains that Samuel meant ‘heard by God’ (1 Samuel 1:20), Jabez was defined as ‘He will cause pain’ because his mother had a difficult childbirth. (1 Chronicles 4:9-10), Benjamin was named ‘Son of my sorrow’ as his mother was dying during delivery (Genesis 35:18). We learn that Simon Peter was called Cephas by Jesus; ‘A Stone’ (John 1:42).

What do you name the Savior?

Jesus means salvation. "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21 NKJV)."

To know Jesus as Savior is to experience God’s salvation.

Do you know Him?

Have you accepted God’s gift of salvation?

“And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

‘Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
For my eyes have seen Your salvation
Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel (Luke 2:25-32 NKJV).”
