How Can You Find Your Spiritual Gifting?

by Annagail Lynes

How can you know what your spiritual gift is?

Did you know that God has a plan for your life? A glorious plan that only you can fulfill? Did you know that you were created specifically for that purpose? That you have the exact characteristics, personality and abilities to accomplish that task? And that only you can fulfill that assignment just the way God wants it accomplished?

Yes, you are here on assignment. The key is to find out what your assignment is!

Let's conduct an experiment. I want you to pick a specific time and place. Then just sit at that place at that time every day for a week. Focus on your breathing. When you are relaxed, ask God, "What do You want me to do with my life?" Listen for His answer.

Do this for a few minutes every day. Eventually God will speak to you. Maybe in a vision. Perhaps a dream, a picture or a still, small voice.

One day I did this and became so relaxed that I almost fell asleep. Then I heard God's command. It was only three words and one of them was "a." It wasn't an instruction for now. It was a future command.

And if He can speak to me, He can speak to you.

What are you naturally good at? What are your talents? What do you enjoy doing? These are clues to where your spiritual gifting lies.

I am a teacher at heart. For many years, I thought that I had to be a school teacher to use that gifting. God didn't call me to teach in the schools. He called me to teach His Word, which I do when I write.

I have the ability to write. I enjoy writing, but it is not my spiritual gift. It is the vehicle in which God uses to teach others through me.

Most people believe what they enjoy doing and what they are good at are somehow contrary to God's assignment for their lives. This isn't true. God has a way of taking every skill, every talent, every ability, you have and using them to propel you to your destiny, your assignment.

When you became a Born-again Christian, God placed inside you a dream, a desire, an assignment. He tattooed it on your heart. God deposited in you everything that pertained to life and godliness and that includes your purpose.

It is imperative to the Kingdom of God that you fulfill your assignment, but you cannot do that if you do not know what it is. That's why you must go to God, your ultimate Source.

The Bible tells us that one of the functions of the Holy Spirit is to lead you into all truth.

In order to discover your destiny, confess "The Spirit of God guides me into all truth regarding what God wants me to do with my life."

What do you wake up thinking about? What is the last thing you think about before you fall asleep? For me, it's writing.

I live, breathe, eat and sleep writing. It's the only thing, besides teaching, that I am passionate about doing.

Your assignment, your desire, might lie in those things you played as a kid.

I used to play teacher. I would line my dolls in front of my toy box. The doors had chalkboards on them. I would teach the dolls for hours. I had the smartest dolls in town.

As I grew older, I took my Mom's portable typewriter and banged out newsletters.

Throughout the years of considering careers, these two dreams remained in my heart.

I abandoned the idea of writing for a living. My family told me that writing was a hobby not a career, that no one would pay me to write. They pointed out all the rejection I would endure, how much trouble it would be to survive as a writer.

They focused on the money. I focused on doing God's will. When I do God's Will, I know that He will provide for my needs because He promised to do so in His Word.

Don't worry about money. Worry about God's plan for you because if you seek God and His righteousness, all the other things will be added unto you.

You have to focus on God's will for your life and not the will of others.

People will try to discourage you from being all you can be for God. They will focus on how it doesn't make sense financially, but, friend, God will supply everything you need if you do His Will.

You must hear His voice and obey no matter what your mother, Aunt Margaret or Uncle Fred have to say about it. The only opinion that matters is God's.

Go to God and get your marching orders. The details of what He wants you to do with your life. Ask Him what your spiritual gifting is and how He wants you to use it.

In recent years, I met a woman with the gift of prophecy. She uses her gift to her advantage. She cons people into giving her money in exchange for her prophecies. She insists that God is telling them to give her the money, or He will bring judgment on them. Whether they receive an accurate message from God through her depends on whether she is tuned in to the Spirit that day or not.

She has the gifting, but she doesn't have the maturity to effectively use her gift to the glory of God.

Many people in the Body of Christ are like two-year-olds with machine guns. They are using their spiritual gifts to con the brethren into giving them money. They use it to get into the best positions in the church. They use it to manipulate people into doing things their way. They leave in their wake a line of spiritually wounded people in which the rest of us have to deal.

If you want to find your spiritual gifting, go to God. Ask Him what He wants you to do. Confess that the Holy Spirit leads you into all truth regarding the assignment God has on your life. Listen to God and obey.

Remember to go to the Source. He knows what He called you to be. It will save you a lot of pain and suffering trying on giftings that aren't yours. God's plan for you is blessed. Yours isn't!
