City Chickens Don't Follow the Crowd

by Nancy Quinn
3/05/2008 / Devotionals

Laughing, my dad hung up the phone. "Well girls, you 'citified' another summer pet." My dad was a veterinarian and my sister and I were privileged to get "summer pets" each year to take care of such as chickens, ducks and lambs. Living on the outskirts of a very tiny town in Iowa, we were able to have interesting pets! We'd take care of them all summer and then return them to the farmer before school started again. One summer we had chickens named Cuddles and Sassy. Sassy ended up being aptly named because every time Cuddles wanted to crow, Sassy would reach over and peck him on the head.

Our fenced backyard was perfect for our summer pets to romp in wide open spaces. And our chickens would let us know they wanted to come in for the evening by hopping onto the doghouse right next to our house. Perched and patiently waiting, we'd then carry them in and feed them dinner and then put them in their big cardboard box house in the laundry room. Well, that's great if you're a city chicken, but the farmer wasn't too pleased that all the chickens went into the henhouse that fall, while Cuddles and Sassy sashayed up to the farmhouse and perched on his dog house.

Do you follow along with the crowd or do you remain bold in your witness when you hear gossip at work or when a friend is choosing a questionable movie to watch? It's not easy to stand out and be different as a Christian at times, but the Lord can give us the courage and boldness we need to be lights shining in a dark place wherever our paths take us. All we have to do is ask the Lord for His strength and His precious Holy Spirit to fill us and help us maintain our witness every day. His great sacrifice freed us from sin and eternal separation from Him. Isn't it the least we can do for Jesus is to be His hands and feet here on earth? So I don't want to be "chicken" and follow the crowd; I want to be bold and stand out, and stand up for Jesus Christ. I want to be like my "citified" chickens and always stand out from the crowd so people know without a doubt that I'm a Christian.

Leviticus 20:26 "You must be holy because I, the Lord, am holy. I have set you apart from all other people to be my very own."

Acts 20:32 "And now I entrust you to God and the message of his grace that is able to build you up and give you an inheritance with all those he has set apart for himself."

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
