Lucy Mouse Discovers a Fruit of the Spirit, Self-Control: A Children's Story

by Nancy Quinn
4/08/2008 / Short Stories

The park by the little white church where Lucy Mouse lived was crowded. Colorful sights and sounds filled the park from the carnival on this Saturday morning and Lucy Mouse scampered toward the balloon line with her friends. Albert Mouse, the class bully, pushed Moose Mouse out of the way and got in line in front of him. Lucy opened her mouth and then just said "Hey, Spider!" The line moved slowly, but soon the friends were able to choose their favorite color balloons and the man tied a balloon onto each of their wrists for them.

Balloons bobbing above their heads, the fluffy cotton candy seemed to call to them next so they found the end of that line and patiently waited their turn. Albert decided to place some of his cotton candy on Lucy's head as he walked by. Moose Mouse reached up and took the sticky pink stuff off Lucy's pretty pink bow as they talked about where they would go next. The cotton candy melted in their mouths as they walked around the park trying to decide which game to play first when they finished their sweet treats.

The line to the ping pong toss was short so the friends got into that line to try to win a goldfish. Albert walked by and tried to bump Lucy's arm as she was ready to toss the ping pong ball, but Lucy saw him and waited until he passed by to toss the little white ball. Plunk it went into the nearest bowl. Lucy Mouse decided to name her fish Fred.

Lucy and Moose decided to go home for lunch to drop off their balloons and put Fred in a bigger home. They raced past as Albert yelled mean words to them. Ignoring Albert, they scampered to the little white church and down the basement stairs. Lucy's family lived behind the Christmas ornament box and Lucy couldn't wait to show her mom her new friend Fred.

They nibbled a piece of cheese as they watched Fred explore the large container Lucy found in the cupboard. After lunch, they decided to go to the pet store to buy Fred some fish food. As they walked through the colorful activities in the park, they pointed out the games they would play on the way back after they gave Fred his lunch too. They noticed Albert waiting in a line near them trying to balance a drink, a hot dog and a stuffed animal he just won. Moose looked at Lucy, but Lucy shook her head and twitched her whiskers. They quietly snuck by Albert unnoticed.

Can you find the ways in the story that the Fruit of the Spirit called Self-Control was used? Sometimes it's hard to use self-control when people say or do mean things to you. Can you remember to show this Fruit of the Spirit this week?

When you become a Christian, God will help you develop ALL the fruits of the Spirit and He gives you the Holy Spirit to help you do your best each day. If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the prayer below that Lucy Mouse and Moose Mouse did, and Jesus will come into your heart and be your best friend too! Jesus loves you very much. Can you hear him knocking on the door to your heart? Won't you invite Him in?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

Galations 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
