My presence will go with you

by Adam Bennett
5/13/2008 / Christian Living

Many companies, individuals and churches are desperate for vision and direction for their businesses, lives and ministries. So many of us feel lost, empty and purposeless.

Moses had moments like this, including in Exodus 33 when he said to God, "Look, you tell me, 'Lead this people,' but you don't let me know whom you're going to send with me. You tell me, 'I know you well and you are special to me.' If I am so special to you, let me in on your plans. That way, I will continue being special to you. Don't forget, this is your people, your responsibility." (v.12-13 The Message)

God knew that Moses needed guidance and promised him, "My presence will go with you. I'll see the journey to the end." (v.14 The Message)

For those of us seeking direction this provides some principles. Firstly, we can be assured that God himself wants to teach us and guide us to where he wants us to go. Part of Moses' request was that God would "show me now your ways." (v.13 ESV)

To Moses it was more important to know God's character and his ways than to know his next steps. And, God obliged as later in the chapter we read how he revealed himself to Moses. (See v. 18-23)

Third, the primary object is that we will be guided to where God is. Moses said to God, "If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here." (v.15 ESV) Similarly, we would do well to say that, regardless of our aspirations, the only steps we will take are those that lead us toward God.

For the Israelites God went before them visibly. "By day the LORD went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night." (Exodus 13:21 NIV)

If we imagine this is the ideal way to be led consider that, through his Holy Spirit, God himself dwells within us. As Jesus promised, "the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." (John 14:26 NASB)

God's assurance to us is as certain as his promise to Moses when he said, "This very thing that you have spoken I will do". (v. 17 ESV)
