Selfless Love

Excitedly I searched for my favorite dress. This was an important night and I had to look my best. I sat on my lavender bedspread and put my lacy anklet socks on and fastened the straps on my shiny black shoes. Racing out to the living room, I stopped short and called out, "Mom, I'm ready." Hearing her voice, I followed the sound to her bedroom to find her lying in bed. She explained that she was very sick with the flu and dad would be taking me to my music concert at school.

"You just don't want to go." I accused. Never mind that my mom went to EVERYTHING I was in. From music concerts to football games just to see me play in the band, my mom was always there for me. As I look back now, I'm sorry for my childhood selfishness as I only thought of myself that day. Now I'm mortified that I didn't even offer to take care of my mom while she was sick that day. I was only thinking of how upset I was that my mom wouldn't be there for me.

I've hopefully outgrown childish selfish attitudes as I try to follow Jesus' example and put others first. Do you rush through your day as you focus on what you need to do and ignore the quiet needs of others? I encourage you to take the time to reach out to others today; the grocery clerk who needs an encouraging word, the friend or family member who doesn't feel well or is just having a bad day. Every day is another gift from the Lord of many opportunities to serve Him in love and faithfulness. How many can you see today?

Mark 12:33 "And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law."
