1 Corinthians 9:26

by Don Costello
8/13/2008 / Bible Studies

1 Corinthians 9:26

I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:

1."I therefore so run, not as uncertainly"

a. uncertainly [84 * adelos; a-negative; delos-evident.] Unsure.

b. Of the effort he put forth and his destination Paul was not unsure.

1). 2 Timothy 1:12 "For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed; for I know in whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day."

2). One of the key words in this verse is the word, "committed". A committed man is a stable man.

a). Proverbs 16:3 "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established."

b). James 1:8 "A double minded man is unstable in all his ways,

2 "so fight I, not as one that beatheth the air."

a. Amplified Bible: "I do not box as one beating the air and striking without an adversary."

b. Shadow boxing, no damage done, beating the air, or in a boxing match, missing my target. Paul made his punches count and he exhorts us to do the same.

1). 1 Timothy 6:12 "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses."

c. Near the end of Paul's ministry, he declared that he had been faithful.

1). 2 Timothy 4:7, 8 "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

d. Paul isn't the only one who exhorts us to fight the good fight.

1). Jude 3 "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints."
