Strengthening Your Mind to Promote Weight Loss

by Cathy Morenzie
9/18/2008 / Health

It is important to be concerned about what foods you eat and the quality of those foods, but God wants us to be more concerned with what we put into our minds than what we put into our mouths.

In Mark 7:15, Jesus corrects the Pharisees by teaching them what is really important. He says, "There is not [even] one thing outside a man which by going into him can pollute and defile him; but the things which come out of a man are what defile him and make him unhallowed and unclean."

This message is equally important to us who purpose to be in good health. In the same way the Pharisees made their mistakes, we can make our own, and can get caught up in counting calories and carbs, while missing the entire message and purpose of why God has called us to be in good health.

Jesus is teaching the Pharisees (and us) that human rules and regulations can overshadow the commandments of God (Mark 7:9). He wants us be motivated to act because we love Him and want to obey His word. He wants us to have a right mind-set; a mind set on spirit which will bring us life and peace (Romans 8:6). Simply put, He wants us to filter all of our burdens, issues and problems through Him and Him alone.

Jesus goes on to say that our negative behaviors start in our minds. Victory comes from renewing your mind, rather than from trying to change your behaviors (Mark 7:21-23). God wants you to take your focus off what you did or did not eat, and shift your focus to what is going on in your mind.

Try these action steps:

Remember that overeating and inactivity are only symptoms of a faulty thought pattern.

Ask God to show you the negative thoughts which are leading to your self-destructive behaviors. These thoughts may be based on beliefs such as: food will comfort you; food is your escape; food is the one thing you have control over; or, over-eating will make you less desirable (and therefore not a target for others).

Whatever your faulty thoughts are, spend some time with God today and ask Him to show the roots of the problem.

Good roots, good fruits!
