The Riches Of The Pauper

I have partied with the famous,
And I've lived amongst the rich,
I've enjoyed what money offered,
And I thought I'd found my niche.

I would spend my cash like water
On the things that made me glad,
For I felt that living easy
Was the sum of what I had.

I was proud to be so wealthy,
I was living like a king,
And I looked to those around, to
See what pleasures they would bring.

Then I came upon a pauper
Who had little to his name,
And I started feeling guilty,
And I felt a bit of shame.

For his life was not so easy,
And he slaved for what he had,
And he knew he wasn't wealthy,
But his life was far from sad.

All his clothes were torn and dirty,
Had no shoes upon his feet,
Had no place to lay his pillow,
Had no bed in which to sleep.

But he had his friends around him,
And his friends where always true,
Although earthly wealth escaped him,
Heaven's treasures he accrued.

Then I thought about my 'friendships',
Which were hollow at the most,
With relationships so empty,
I had naught of which to boast.

And I felt just like a pauper,
Very poor, without a friend,
Although there are many people,
At the parties I attend.

Seems the pauper is so lucky,
And with treasures he is blessed,
While I'm very, very lonely,
And in wealthy rags I'm dressed.
