A Little Burrow

Easter is fast approaching. One of the stories I think about when Easter comes to mind took place when Jesus officially rode into Jerusalem. It's found in Luke 19:29-40. The first thing that Jesus did was to have his disciples get the donkey colt. Apparently this wasn't an infant colt because it was strong enough for Jesus to ride on. But it was a young donkey.

When I think of a donkey I think of a very stubborn animal. Debbie tells me sometimes that I have a cartoon mind. I suppose I was seriously infected as a child watching all those Bugs Bunny and Road Runner cartoons, I don't know. But when I think of a donkey I see it sitting in the middle of the road with some little man tugging and pulling getting madder and madder as he tries to get the little critter to stand up and move.

In reality the donkey has been a primary beast of burden in many nations and still is today. I've seen documentaries and I know you have too, of these plain looking creatures standing about three and a half to four foot tall laden down with loads that make me groan just to look at them.

Jesus told His disciples to go to a village where they would find a donkey colt tied that had never had a rider. They were to simply walk up to it, untie it and bring it back to Him. He told them that if anyone asked them why they were taking the donkey to simply tell them that the Lord needs it. Now how many people do you know that would buy that story? But God had pre-planned this entire event and when someone did ask them why they were taking the donkey and they told them that the Lord needed it they received no interference. If you ask me that's a miracle.

Why was this little donkey so important? It was a direct fulfillment of prophecy God had spoken through the prophet Zechariah in Zechariah 9:9. It was foretold that their King would arrive in Jerusalem humbly riding on a donkey colt. Isn't that ironic? Read it for yourself.

In my estimation it was also a miracle that Jesus was able to ride this creature so easily. Remember that the scripture said that the donkey had never been ridden. Have you ever climbed on the back of an animal that has never been ridden? I haven't but I've seen others do it and let me tell you that animal will throw one more fit. But there was no resistance at all when the disciples laid their outer robes on the donkey and helped Jesus on.

This entire incident is a miracle to say the least. It's a miracle that Jesus knew where the donkey was; it's another miracle that the owners didn't protest about the disciples taking it. And it is a miracle that Jesus was even able to ride it. But what creature would resist when God in the flesh wants to climb on its back?

Jesus knew what He was riding into. He knew that within a week He'd be hanging on a cross dying for the sin of the world. To me that's the greatest miracle of all; that He would even stoop so low as to die for my sin. I'm not worthy aside from His blood and provision. But then that's the kind of God we serve.

The point I'd like to make about this story is that Jesus had made full provision. The way had been made. He hasn't changed. It may look bleak; it may seem that the world is crashing around you. You may feel that there's nothing more to hold on to; or that you are hanging on but you're not sure exactly what you're hanging on to. I want to tell you today that Jesus won't let you down. I want to assure you that if our God is mindful enough to make the way to fulfill the least of prophecies and pave the way for His disciples to get a young donkey for Him to ride into Jerusalem, He certainly won't let you down. As you go through your trials remember the great and terrible trial that Jesus was about to face and think about His victory ride into Jerusalem on that young donkey. Know then that no matter what we go through, we are riding through it with the King!
