The Thief and Our Children

by Shakera Reid-Stewart
3/14/2009 / Poetry

The audacity of him to flaunt this in our face;
While we weren't looking he began to make his case.
He surely didn't sneak through our back doors,
He made his mark boldly from the ceiling to the floors.
He tempts them and takes them with very little effort,
With toys, violence, and things that provide false comfort.
He infiltrates their minds and hits them where they're vulnerable,
But what if they had parents who really were dependable?
What if we never let him take up residence in our own personal space?
To run rampant through our homes as if he owned the place.
This thief is treacherous and has a master plan;
To wreak havoc in their lives and in the lives of all man.
Although he already knows how this story will end,
He'll damage everyone who lets him until then.
So how do we get our own selves out of this villain's den?
So that we can end the relationship between this thief and our children.

He inspires them to steal, to cheat and to lie
He encourages them to take risks that causes them to die
He plays with their minds and distorts their sense of pride
And causes them to be untrustworthy and feel the need to hide.
He cheats them out of happiness, love and their blessings,
And convinces them that they have no way else of coping.
We need to take back our loved ones and all he has beguiled
And take time to communicate with our children instead of letting them go wild.
Let's instill in them good morals and a sense of responsibility,
So that they can use their time wisely and be proud of their ability.
Take them to church and show them God's way,
Give them a fighting chance against the devil each day.
Be a great role model and provide the proper foundation
We can remove the label of extinction from this generation.
Let's make them more of an asset and less of a burden
And end the relationship between this thief and our children.
