Lucy Mouse Weeds Her Prayer Garden, a Children's Story
by Nancy Quinn
4/11/2009 / Short Stories
The sun's warm rays tickled Lucy Mouse's furry grey cheeks. She and her new friend Candy Caterpillar played catch with a bright yellow ball in the park next to the little white church where she lived with her family. Lucy Mouse tossed the ball and a breeze suddenly lifted it high over Candy's outstretched arms and the ball plopped in the grass behind her. She leaned over and grabbed the ball and suddenly called, "Look, Lucy Mouse! It's a garden of violets!" The two friends counted the patch of fifteen violets and watched as a golden butterfly fluttered over the little garden briefly and then flew away.
Each day Lucy and Candy stopped by to see the violets and noticed colorful weeds begin to slowly grow in the patch. The weeds had interesting shaped leaves and began to distract them from the tiny violets. One day, Lucy Mouse peeked under one of the large leaves of the weeds and noticed that the petals of the violets were drooping. The violets seemed sad that they could no longer feel the sun's rays. Lucy Mouse sat back and looked at the little violet patch. Candy said, "Lucy Mouse, we need to save the violets. Let's ask your mom what to do!" The two friends raced down the steps to Lucy's home behind the Christmas ornaments box in the church basement.
Lucy Mouse's mom had just finished drying the dishes as the two friends raced into the kitchen. She hung up the towel to dry and said "Let's see what we can do for your garden."
At the violet patch, Lucy Mouse and Candy gently lifted up the leaves of the weeds to show Lucy's mom the fifteen drooping flowers. Lucy Mouse's mom kneeled down and showed the children how to carefully pull the weeds out around the violets. As they worked, Lucy's mom said, "These violets remind me of my prayers to God. Sometimes when I'm very busy thinking about things and worrying, I allow the weeds of worries and fears to grow in my mind and distract me from praying. But when I pull out the weeds and just concentrate really hard on talking to God, then the warm rays of God's love can shine through while I pray and I can hear his answers."
Lucy Mouse's whiskers twitched and she excitedly exclaimed, "There!" They all sat back and admired their work. The little violets seemed to already brighten as the sun's rays started to touch their delicate petals again.
Is it sometimes hard to pray and talk to God? When the weeds of worry or fear start to grow, just pull those weeds out and give them to God. He loves you and there is no prayer that is too big or too small all your prayers are important to God because He loves you very much! If you don't know Jesus as your best friend yet, you can just pray the below prayer and really mean it. Jesus promises to never leave you! Can you hear him knocking on the door to your heart? Won't you invite him in to be your best friend?
Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.
May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
