Lucifer Unleashed

by Adam Herring
5/03/2010 / Short Stories

Michael the Archangel descended through the shimmering folds of the Heavenly realms, rushing towards Earth's vast atmosphere with fierce determination. His sparkling blue eyes searched the lush, blue and green planet below; a planet no longer tainted or polluted by the harmful inventions of humankind.

While he continued scanning the surface, daylight crept above the cold, alien horizon, casting a warm glow on his olive toned flesh and golden mane. Even though being the second in command to the Armies of Heaven, he felt a growing uneasiness to the ominous undertaking His father had placed on him to perform.

After what took seconds to accomplish, he neared the ground with lightning speed; his muscular body was seemingly unaffected by the intense laws of gravity. Well-spaced trees and a dense patchwork of dewy ground cover overlie the place he arrived at. Michael hadn't been here since the Battle of Armageddon. He did not recognize the foreign landscape because the Earth had since produced wild and strange forms of plant and animal life.

Above him, the enveloping dawn filtered into the primeval forest, weaving like colorful outstretched arms, dissolving the last few traces of night from the lofty boughs. Up ahead, the towering tree line gave way to a gradually rising terrain shrouded in morning mist. He approached, hesitant, the task he had to carry out weighed heavily on his thoughts. Michael pushed on regardless, obedient, trusting the Father's plan. There, hidden beneath the thick carpet of grass and fallen leaves was the door to the bottomless pit; the door he came to open.

Michael stepped forward. Once the heels of his boots touched the secluded portal, the field began to shift, the grass withdrew, unearthing a round, metal door twelve feet in diameter, inscribed with the Heavenly seal that no man or women had seen with their own eyes. He took the gold key hanging off the matching chain around his waist and knelt to insert the key into the seal. Of its own power, the door split in two, revealing a dark, cavernous hole.

Hovering in mid air, Michael drew his sword and entered.

His highly developed senses became overwhelmed with the pit's dreadful stench and the screams and cries of torment, which saturated the faint gloom. The outlines of sunken, deformed faces were barely visible under the glow of his fiery sword as he fluttered deeper into the nightmarish abyss. He had forgotten how many were here, how many that had been deceived by the Son of the Morning Star. The number was unfathomable. As he passed, they pleaded for him to summon the Lamb, their frail hands trying to reach him but held in place by heavy chains. Michael lowered his gaze as righteous anger stirred throughout his being, all the while getting closer to the one God had chosen for a final work.

From the flickering brightness that issued from his edged weapon, he detected a quivering mass cuffed to a massive boulder protruding from the jagged, charred wall. The fearless angel reached down, snatching the boney figure that resembled a malnourished adolescent, pulling him to eye level. Boney man did not match his stare; instead, he glanced down, afraid.

"Has the time come for me to be released from this prison?" The figured inquired in a stammering, almost high-pitched voice.

Michael said nothing. Instead, he slashed at the chains with his sword. In one robust swoop, the bulky, interconnecting rings shattered into tiny fragments, drifting in the black void. Confused, the scrawny entity recoiled in fear, shivering like a frightened worm dangling on a fishhook.

In a quick blast of his wings, Michael leaped into the air, landing on the grassy field outside the portal; the worm still firmly in his taut clutches. On the surface again, the door closed with a deafening clang, shaking the nearby trees, and disturbing the peaceful balance of the surrounding area. He threw the creature down, watching him crawl along the grass, whimpering.

"Hear the words the Father has sent me to speak, Lucifer, Son of the Morning Star. Elohim releases you upon the Earth for a short time, to deceive the nations once more. Go, and do." He stated, having difficulty releasing his mortal enemy to wreak havoc all over again.

Lucifer grinned, lying down in the soft glade, breathing in the fresh climate. Suddenly, he began laughing, his voice becoming deeper, fuller.

"I imagine it pains you to repeat those orders. I am sure you'd rather dispatch me here, take revenge for all the brethren I manipulated. What troubles you even further, I assume, is that you have to obey your Father and grant me authority, allowing my wickedness to spread across this inferior world."

When he finished speaking, something began happening to Lucifer. His inky body started mutating. First, the shoulder blades on his leathery hide started ripping through. Long, velvety wings grew outward, unfurled, increasing in length. The scorched hue of his body also changed. When the transformation was complete, Lucifer stood on his feet a tall, sculpted figure of beauty.

"Now that I am in my fullness, there is nothing you can do to stop me." Lucifer taunted, laughing. He glared into Michael's blazing eyes, tempting the Archangel into battle.

"We shall see about that." Michael challenged. He grabbed the hilt of his sword, preparing to drag away this beast into the Lake of Fire himself. Nevertheless, he held a steadfast position, realizing that Lucifer was simply toying with him, trying to get him to disobey the Almighty.

"Depart from my presence unclean Spirit. Your temptation has no power over me." Michael challenged.

Lucifer gritted his teeth, growling. The angry dissident began spewing a slew of hateful, vile obscenities in angelic speech. He shot into the air, his glistening white feathers slicing the still air, giving his adversary a scornful glance before disappearing inside a thick web of clouds.

Michael stared back, wearing a look of joy. He took comfort in knowing that the Earth and the Saints would forever be free soon, never to witness or experience Lucifer's evil. He thrust his wings outward, catching a gust of wind. The powerful gale carried him upwards until he soared beyond Earth's radiant glimmer, returning to his Father's Throne.

The End.
