Sunday School Classroom Management - Be Prepared

by Jessica Gerald
1/25/2011 / Education

When it comes to teaching, being prepared is one of the most important things. You will find that the lesson and the Sunday school hour go much more smoothly when you have prepared ahead of time.

1. The Lesson

Of course the lesson should be prepared ahead of time. We all have weeks that are busy and our lesson is studied at the last minute. But I think we owe it to the Lord and to our students to start early in the week. Even 15 minutes a day can help. I find that when I do this, I am more confident and calm on Sunday morning when the children come in.

2. Classroom Preparation

Another thing that helps me is to arrive about a half hour early. That's optimum, but even 15 minutes gives you time to run off papers or set up materials that will be needed for that morning's lesson. Kids are much more settled when they enter an organized classroom.

3. Prayer

The last aspect of preparation, and the most important, is prayer. It is a good idea to pray for your students every day. Pray for their salvation, their safety, their families, and any other needs that you know of. Also pray that the Lord would prepare their hearts to receive what he wants to teach them through the upcoming Sunday's lesson. Pray that he would give you the words and activities to reach them and make the lesson real and meaningful to them.

When we are called to be Sunday school teachers, it is a ministry to be taken seriously. Being prepared is crucial to a well-managed classroom, and a well-managed classroom is usually a learning classroom.
