SAM -- poem

is inebriated and
easy to tell,
not by the unwashed
smell, nor the knowledge
he hangs around the same back alley
hoping for a prize -- an old
pair of shoes tossed
a leftover pizza (no anchovies)

and today's the same as any
with a favourite slouch,
tired eyes influenced
by the lack of sleep inside
the garbage bin, at least
safety was his reward.

Soon from now, other lads will
arrive and they could
shuffle off to the liquor
store, hopeful their
hats will fill with enough
change to buy
a bottle of Southern Comfort.

Somewhere beyond this
dismal street, above the smell
of Monday's stacked
garbage, and across a lake
sweet enough to grace the new
tourist brochure
a family is pondering;
when is papa coming home?

Richard enjoys writing poems; many of which have been published in Print and Online. He and his wife, Esther are also co-authors of stories and a print novel. They are "born again" Christians and very busy in their church, Abundant Life Victory International, in Bible Hill, Nova Scotia.
