Excuse Me

I was sitting outside my oldest daughter's room reading late at night. I moved to the hall because my husband was going to sleep and we don't have individual lights on our one bedside table. Any light at all keeps that man awake. As I sat in the hallway outside her room, lost in my newest book, I heard her stirring in bed. As she turned, she said in the sweetest little girl voice, "Excuse me, excuse me." I smiled and felt this warmth pour straight out of my heart all over. I peeked and confirmed she was still asleep. My whole body filled with immense pride and admiration my daughter was polite in her sleep!

I was so proud of her, and I was equally proud of myself. We had taught her to be polite, and she was. No shows for Mom and Dad. No just being nice in front of company. She was really and truly polite even in her sleep! All of a sudden my choices to teach good manners and work at being a positive role model were instantly validated. I knew that my efforts on her behalf would help her live a better life, make more friends, and be admired for her manners as long as she chooses to use them. As I sat back down to read, the warm and googly feeling stayed with me and I thanked God for my beautiful, polite daughter.
