High School Senior Plans Career in Education
by Greg Miller
10/22/2019 / Education
By Greg Miller © 2019 Goodie was a high school senior who had already chosen his career path. “I’m going to graduate from college with a degree in World History, then earn a teacher’s certification,” Geoff told Grace, his mom, and Gracious, his dad. “What do you plan to teach?” asked Gracious. “I hope to begin teaching North American history to high school students,” Goodie responded. “Then I want to teach History of Africa to the same grade level.” “What will be your next step?” asked Grace. “After teaching History of Africa for several years, I’d like to teach History of the Middle East before I retire,” Goodie responded. “I would enjoy teaching each of those courses for about 10 years.” “Let’s see,” Gracious calculated. “Three different courses and 10 years per course, correct?” “Yes, dad, that’s what I’m calculating.” “That’s only about 30 years of working as a teacher,” said Grace with a puzzled frown. “That doesn’t sound like a very long teaching career.” “It might be a bit shorter than for a typical teacher,” said Goodie. “But, you see, I have big plans for after I retire.” “What plans?” inquired Gracious. “The first thing I’d like to do is take a nice long, extended vacation,” Goodie explained. “I’d like to spend about three months in each area of the world about which I’ve taught, experiencing the culture and getting to know the people. I want to write a book about my adventures and share it with the world.” “You have such wonderful plans,” said Grace. “I’m very proud of you.” “I want to make you and dad proud of me, mom,” said Goodie. “But most of all, I want the Lord Jesus to be proud of me. I know I was placed on this earth to make a difference, and one of the ways I can do that is to teach about different parts of the world and the fact that God created everything.” Goodie continued, “I believe the Lord has much work for me to do here on earth. And I want His words to me to be “’Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou has been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of the Lord.’” “What will you enjoy the most about heaven?” asked Grace. “Spending eternity in heaven not teaching all those history courses I’ll be teaching here on earth,” Goodie smiled. “What do you want to do with your time throughout eternity?” asked Gracious. “I will be continually praising the Lord Jesus Christ,” Goodie replied. “It will be a nonstop job, but time will no longer exist, so it heaven will be a forever vacation!” To contact the writer of this column about speaking engagements (in the U.S.A.), including Christian Comedy Fundraising Outreaches, Christian Creativity Seminars and/or puppet ministry, please type “Speaking Engagements” in the subject line and e-mail [email protected] or [email protected].
