Prepare for Change With Interviews
by Tonja Taylor
12/31/2019 / Career
Interviewing for other positions keeps you aware of all you have to offer. Consider it, even if you are satisfied with your career path. Experts suggest scheduling at least two interviews a year, even if its with the same company.
You never know who youll meet or what youll discover and you may find a fascinating open door to a position you love even more. Best of all, youll be prepared to handle sudden change.
Take Charge and Prepare for Change
Change is coming, and although we often see it coming, sometimes we don't.
Life is almost always shorter than we plan for it to be, and a proactive stance is best. You are in control of your life, so what do you want to do? If your job ended tomorrow, what would you do?
Unemployment, if its awarded to you, takes a few weeks to process. If you have a savings account and credit cards, that's great, but those can be depleted with amazing speed.
Keep an Achievement File
"So, tell us about yourself", I often hear at the beginning of interviews. This is a great opportunity to share information that you may not have had room for on the resume or application. The question often arises at the beginning of interviews
I have had so many jobs in the past 20 years I literally can't remember them all.
After struggling for a couple years to list everything in order as most applications request, I got smart. My resume usually lists an "Experience Highlights" section that goes roughly in chronological order.
However, I switch categories as necessary. For instance, if I'm applying for a teaching or training position, I list that category of experience first. If i'm applying for a management position, I list jobs I've had with supervisory experience first.
If the company puts emphasis on education, I list my degree(s) and other training first, then the experience.
Be Flexible
Also, be open to consider other careers.
Jobs often don't last. People do. Ask God to guide you to the career you want, and go for it. All of His promises are "Yes" and "Amen," and with Him, all things are possible!
Through books, courses, presentations, service, prayer, worship, and more, Tonja and her husband live to exalt God. Her series for girls, P.O.W.E.R. GIRL ADVENTURES, is now out (books I-V), along with LEGACY; YOUR HOLY HEALTH: VISIONS OF THE KING, and more. See the "River Rain Creative" YT channel.
