The Birds and the Bees Talk With Your Pre-Teen Child

Years ago, our darling pre-teen daughter was learning Latin in fourth grade. One day, she came to my husband and me. "I already know a Latin word," she told us, proudly, pointing to the word "fetus" on a brochure I'd recently given her.

We agreed. She had indeed learned this word that means the unborn and developing young of a human (not just a mass or glob, like abortonists and other people like to call it, when they are trying to get pregnant mothers to murder their babies!). 

Months earlier, our bright and inquisitive daughter had asked how babies were made. After praying quickly for wisdom (Actually, I had prayed for years that, when the time came for this serious talk, I would have God's words and grace upon my lips. He is faithful!), I told her, "The mommy brings the egg and the daddy brings the white tadpole. Then they mix them together."

At that time, she had been satisfied with that, perhaps picturing that the two were mixed together in a cup or something. And the LORD gave me peace that that was enough for then.

But lately, I had been sensing it was time for the "birds and the bees talk," about how babies are truly created (the way God designed it), so I had given her the brochure with the word "fetus" on it.  That brochure and another, which I had received from the local Christian pro-life clinic, showed real photos of a baby's development in the womb.

She looked at those, and then a few days later, our darling, bright, inquisitive daughter had even more questions. With her little brow wrinkled, she asked, "But Mama, how do the egg and the sperm get together?!"

Although I don't remember exactly the words the LORD put in my mouth, I felt His loving Fatherly Presence as His wonderful Holy Spirit helped me. He explained it in a way that was genteel to her, helping her understand that His Plan is for babies to be created in the God-given way of holy marriage expressed in intimate physical love between one man and one woman.

He will do the same for you; not just for that sensitive conversation, but for anything that you need to explain to your children, or spouse.  He is faithful! Just ask Him for His wisdom and His perfect timing, and to make you senstive to both. He will help you!
