What Are You Building?

by Olawale Ogunsola

Then Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and He's disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them,
"Do you not see all their things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one
Stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down." Matthew 24:1-2.

Since the time of Jesus earthly ministry, His Disciples have always been interested in showing Him Temple buildings. In modern day language, this is refered to as "church building." Disciples today do not only point or call Christ attention to an ancient costly buildings but they do all to show their own might in all ramifications to build structures to "impress" Him.

Many modern day Disciples pull all resources together to install church structures in place that the Lord will say "thank you". Many do not hesitate to engage "extraneous" means to find fund to execute church buildings. Amazingly enough, there are faithful ministers of the Gospel who are living unhappily because the have no church buildings to be proud of at all or that they do not have a "mega church building" to prove that they have arrived, where as, their work pleases their employer.

Do they need to be sad!

Going by Christ's declaration in Matthew 24:2, every most beautiful church building as well as not beautiful ones will be pull down. There will be no exception at all.

The arrival of Coronavirus also known ab COVID 19 teaches some lessons. In many nations of the world, people are being quarantined and total or partial lock-downs are being declared. Curfew are put in place. No one is allowed to go out of his abode. All in the name of COVID 19, a contagious disease. Now, what happened to the beautiful church buildings during this period? They have become abodes of cockroaches, insects and other rodents, except where additional cost of fomugation has been carried out. Yet, the purpose of putting the structures in place has been defeated.

God forbid, where there is any war, civil or inter-nation, what will become of the church buildings. Many worship centers are pulled down by the invading enemies of the state. Not minding the huge amount spent to put the structure in place.

What are disciples to do?

The pre-occupation of every disciples of Jesus Christ is to follow His footstep and instruction or commandment.
Christ's footstep : The Scriptures reveal,
"And seeing the multitudes, He went upon a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him.
Then He opened His mouth and taught them." Matthew 5:1-2.

This teaching, popularly called "the Olivet discourse" starts from chapter five ends in chapter number seven of the Gospel of Jesus as recorded by Mathew.
His disciples appreciated this and their request to Him in Luke 11:1 is
"Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples."
He granted this request which becomes, "The Lord's Prayer" today.
Not only this, Christ's commandment to all disciples is,
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the
name of the Father and the son and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to
observe all things that I have commanded you...? Matthew 28:18-20.
Note that Jesus Christ taught His disciples (Mark 13:4); He also taught the multitudes (Luke 5:3).

Do you do the same?

Please, note that I am not an enemy of Church building. I am sure that the congregation of the Lord needs to be cared for. Their welfare is salient. They must be made as comfortable as possible. So we need descent structure to be put in place, after all, sun will rise and rain will fall. The body of Jesus Christ must be protected. When the congregation He taught for three days were hungry, He fed them because He loves them.

Following His footsteps and commandment, we must teach the body of Christ His commandments as well as provide accommodation for their good.
Even when the structures are destroyed, the taught church will remain alive in (and to) Christ forever. It will be total failure to build structures and not to teach the people in it. Stay blessed and prepared for the coming of the Lord.
