The Emo generation
by John Urs
10/20/2007 / Teen Issues
All of us have seen at the Mall, at school and on the streets and parks teenagers dressed in black, having weird haircuts and having a depressive look.
They are the generation who has most of any other generation: they have access to the information like never before, they have more "freedom" like ever before them and still are depressed and haunted by suicide thoughts.
It looks like they are obsessed with all that's connected to death and unhappiness. Their hair is covering half of their face, they love piercing and some of them are cutting their body with shaving blades.
They are a new wave of teenagers, they are tomorrows generation: having all, but having nothing. Most of them are depressed and antisocial they listen to a certain type of music and dress and wear jewelry having skeleton shape.
To be an emo means to be separated from the society and always sad. This is the definition that one of the emo teenagers has.
I wonder why now, when we are more civilized then ever we loose our children and they are seeing the life with such a pessimistic perception.
I remember that being a kid and later a teenager I had to face many problems and to see many things without ever dreaming to the chance of having them. I still remember the little train on the toy store's shelves and the remote controlled automobile that I never had the chance to have them.
I remember my first love and I remember how much I've suffered when she told me that it was just a game. I remember when my parents were telling me: "You can't have that thing."
I remember being hungry and thinking how good will be to have just a small piece of meat. I remember dreaming about candies and chewing gum, but I never remember about me being an emo teenager.
You know why? Because I never took the things in my life for granted, I never thought that I deserve those things. I always saw life as a beautiful challenge and I found myself comfort and refuge in books.
There was only one moment when I felt maybe more depressed than an emo, it was the moment when I was meditating about my eternal destiny. I knew that life is more than what I saw, I knew that something in me is longing for something deeper than what I can grab with my hands and with my mind, I was searching for that perfect love, perfect acceptance and perfect relationship.
I've heard many times about God and Jesus Christ, I've even made a confession to a priest who promised me that my sins were forgiven; but I was still empty, still unhappy and still depressed.
One day, when I was 15 years old I decided what I want to do, in my mind came clear that there are only two ways to go: one was God and the other one was to end my life. Even now when I think to those moments I fell the tension and the importance of that decision and I realize how wonderful and amazing is my Lord Jesus Christ.
I was an emo I wasn't dressed like one of them, I wasn't acting and listening to the same music like one of them, but my heart was crying for love and understanding, my heart was desperate for love and satisfaction, my life needed a purpose to live for.
Why is this generation an emo generation ?
Because we are telling them that there is no God and there is no eternal life, we are taking God's Word out of schools and out of their mind and souls. It is because we try to replace love and understanding with money, cars and clothes and because we tell them that material is more important than spiritual.
We made them emo !!!!!!!!!!!!
We took them the last ray of hope, we mature them before their time comes and we tell them that life is nothing more than Hollywood and Bill Gates. We taught them to measure success in money and position and that the only way to be happy is to put God and others aside, using them for your own benefits.
My beloved children, there is HOPE for you. Lord Jesus Christ didn't change. We might have change the Pledge of Allegiance, we might have taken prayer and the Scripture out of your way, but Jesus Christ is alive and He really cares about you and love you with a genuine and deep love.
My tears are coming down when I write this word and from the bottom of my heart I pray for you to be joyful, to be satisfied and to be optimistic and happy. I realize how blessed we are to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and to be in that permanent state of peace, joy and satisfaction.
It's such a contradiction: we want to bring happiness to our children, but in the same time we take them the means of happiness.
Please stop ruining our young generation telling them that immorality is ok, telling them that they need no God to be happy. Please don't kill their souls with materialism but give them the hope and the joy of salvation through the faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
My beloved teenager, boy or girl if you read these lines an find yourself in them, I encourage you to get out from your depression and darkness and see the "Light that shines into the darkness and the darkness didn't overcome it", see our Lord Jesus Christ who understands you and loves you as nobody else does. Come today to Him, surrender your life in His wounded hands and experience the freedom and joy of Heaven on Earth.
Today you can become a child of God. Stop being an emo! Be a new creature in Jesus Christ!
