When Is Divorce A Better Option In Marrage?

by Olawale Ogunsola
1/23/2021 / Marriage

Mankind is not the creator of the institution called marriage. It is the initiative of the Creator of Heaven and Earth. In His infinite wisdom, He observed that it was not good that the first Man, Adam, should live alone, and that he needed a "help meet" or a helper comparable to him to cure his loneliness. This was the aim of the Initiator of marriage. He is not only the Initiator, He is the only best Match Maker. He alone knows the right peg of a man that can be in the right hole of a woman without any complaint whatsoever. Read Genesis 2:18.

On the other hand, mankind had hijacked the role of the Lord as the Match Maker and had been in control of everything connected with marriage. This has been the reason behind the divorce cases that is witnessed at an astronomical rate today.

What is introduced into marriage, that is divorce, is not part of His plans at all.
And let me point it out here that divorce is not even the making of man" Do I seem to contradict myself? No! Let me explain further :

When the ancient Jews continued to multiply, laws, rules and regulations were handed over to them through prophet Moses in his days. One of the laws runs like this :
"suppose a man marries a woman but she does not please him. Having discovered sonething wrong with her, he writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and send her away from his house." Deuteronomy 24:1.

This aspect has been emphasized by mankind more than working for the sucess of marriage. He has chosen the easier one, divorce.

What is the stand of the Initiator of marriage on divorce? Malachi 2:16 reveals,
"For I hate divorce!" says the Lord, the God of Isreal. To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty," says the Lord of Heaven's Armies. "So guard your heart, do not be unfaithful to your wife."

God hate divorce in every sense of the word because it is against His divine plan of one plus one equals to one, that is a man and a woman becoming one spirit to bring forth Godly children. Malachi 2:15
"Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth."

That means, divorce will distrupt the plans He has and the expected outcome of a marital union.

Why then does the Lord commanded or permitted or still permit writing a document of divorce? The answer is simple and it came from the mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself in Mark 10:5-6 thus,
"But Jesus responded," He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.
But God made them male and female from the beginning of creation.

The Pharisess of Jesus days who were religionist only wanted to justify their right to divorce as a right and priviledge. It is the Lord Jesus who revealed the reason why the Initiator of marriage allows what He hates. He even approves it. Why? He understands that "the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." Genesis 6:5 (King James Version, KJV).

Not only this, He knows very well that "for out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies" Matt. 15:19. KJV.

Pay attention to the word "heart" in the last three quoted verses. A hard-hearted man has a wicked heart that contains or breeds evil thoughts. A wicked heart with evil thoughts will encourage and push its owner to murder. Note that life is sacrosanct to the Creator. Remember His commandment to His people in Exodus 20:13. " You must not murder." NLT.

Now, when life Giver sees that lives of people involved in a marriage is at stake, should He allow them to be wasted? Should He allow little matters that will evaporate into thin air with time eliminate lives of those involved? No! Not so!

Have you heard this words before, "Time heals old wounds"? It is a statement that holds forever. There are couples whose relationships have gone sour to the point that both can murder each other or either can kill his /her partner. There is no need to lose lives on any matter in marriage, so this might be one of the reasons for God giving the commandment that His people can give a written document of divorce to their wives, if need be.

It is however sad that divorce is considered by mankind as the best solution to all forms of disputes in marriage. This is perfectly wrong. Between two persons, there cannot but be areas of differences. These can be ironed out amicably, between them or an experienced and matured counsellor may be involved and life and relationship will begin again and blossom.

Do you know that divorce can also be a factor that will incubate another sin before God? It will affect the person who is divorced and the one who initiates the divorce. Read these words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:31-32 and 19:9.
"You have heard the law that says, 'A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce!
But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery.
And I tell you this, whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery-unless his wife has been unfaithful."

Can you see the risk involved in engaging in divorce? It ignites another sin. Pay attention to the truth declared by Jesus Christ in the quoted verses : this is, being"unfaithful".

Unfaithfulness is a time bomb that is readily available to explode at any time and it can claim the life of the husband or that of the wife or both lives may be lost to unfaithfulness. That is why the Lord allows divorce, even in the New Testament, to save lives. Jesus Christ gives life and will not allow any life to be lost. Jesus says,
"My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life." John 10:10b.

Should such a Personality allow loss of lives? He will not. That is the reason He will allow divorce instead of loss of lives. In that wise, it is allowed to part ways between couples rather than either or both losing their lives. If the two are alive, there may one day be a room for reconciliation. Even where this is not possible, both will fulfill their God-given individual destinies in their different new locations.

Each person, male or female came into this world to carry out an assignment for his Maker. So no room must be left for anyone or anything to impair successful implementation of God's given assignments.

After all, every saint in Paradise will be like Angels and there will be no marriage in heaven. Jesus Christ told the sadducess, another sect of religionists, thus,
"for when the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage. In this respect they will be like the angels in heaven." Mark 12:25. NLT.

So the issue of marriage and divorce should be settled here and must not be allowed to impair your smooth journey to heaven.

In summary, God hates divorce because He made the institution of marriage available to mankind to bring forth Godly children. He allows mankind to put away his wife where unfaithfulness takes place and to prevent murder.

Therefore, do all within your means to save your marriage because consequences of a divorce are great, grave and many. Try as much as possible to keep your home. However, when your life and /or that of your spouse may be lost, to prevent murder, go ahead with divorce as the unavoidable option for you.

Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
