Age And Marriage 4

by Olawale Ogunsola
5/09/2021 / Marriage

It is a well known fact, especially to those who are friends of the Holy Bible, that it was the man who was created first and the woman was made out of man. This means that he was older than the woman, although she was existing in the man since he was created although she was then a rib.

So, it has been the norm among mankind that a man will look for a lady who is younger than he is to marry. The society will not take it, in many races, from a man who chooses to marry a female who is older than he is. The society can bear with people who are almost of the same age. In certain cultures, a young man who marries an older lady will be seen and treated like a leper. He becomes an outcast.

Do you know why? Many people who are antagonists of this practice strongly believe that it will become very difficult for the woman to honor and respect the man. She will be looking down on him as one of her younger brothers. The tendency is truly there that this can happen but where true love is and both know the Scriptures, this tendency will find no place to rear its ugly head, no matter what happens.

Apostle Peter's exhortation is
"In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands." I Peter 3:1 a-b. New Living Translation.

No condition is attached. Irrespective of the age of the man it is mandatory for the wife to accept his authority. After all, she agreed to this when he proposed to her or when she proposed to the man, as the case may be. Why then should age difference intoxicate an older woman to challenge the husband's authority?

There is no Bible based instruction which states that it is a sin to marry a lady who is older than a man. It is a matter of God's leading and your choice. The most pertinent thing is love. Love covers many faults and weaknesses.

There are known women who are older than their spouses and still respect them very well. Still, there are women who are far younger than their husbands and find it extremely difficult to bow to their man's authority. An example of this was a Queen who publicly disobeyed the king's authority. Esther 1:12.
"But when they conveyed the king's order to Queen Vashti, she refused to come
This made the king furious and he burned with anger."

Can you see that age is not a barrier for pride? The king must be older and he reigned over a vast empire, yet the woman disrespected her; she lost her position to another woman who was far better than she was. Esther 1:19.

Please, be careful!

Is there any verse from the Holy Bible that suggests that it is possible for a woman to be older than her husband? The answer is "yes!", at least impliedly!

Let us briefly consider the story of Tamar, Judah's daughter-in-law in Genesis chapter thirty-eight. This young lady was married to Er, the first son of Judah, a man of great destiny. For his evil acts, the Lord killed Er. Tamar was given to Onan to become his wife, to raise seeds for the dead man. Onan also did what was evil before God and He slew him also.

The third child who happened to be the last child was Shelah. Because of his age which was not ripe for marriage, Judah did not give him Tamar to wife.

"Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law.
" Go back to your parent's home and remain a widow until my son Shelah is old enough to marry you. " verse II.

What does this mean? Tamar was a matured lady and was married twice. This was due to cold hands of death that snatched the men from her. She was ripe to be given to Shelah but Shelah was not ripe for marriage. So, she remained a widow, waiting for the time her would-be husband will be ripe to marry her.

Can you see the disparity in their ages?

Some women remain singles simply because their RIGHT MAN (note that I am not talking of a PERFECT MAN) are not yet matured for marriage. As soon as he is ripe, God will arrange how they will meet that they might fulfill their destinies, together as husband and wife.

It is sad that so many people, male and female fail to care for how to fulfill their destiny but are bothered about age. There is no age that God cannot bring out a surprise miracle.

Wait for yours.

To be older than is not the problem but your ability to obey the Word of God in its entirety. Ask for the help of the Holy Ghost.
Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
