Comparing Repentance in Isaiah 55:6-9 and Galatians 5:19-23

by Eddie Maddox
7/02/2021 / Bible Studies

"19 Now the doings (practices) of the flesh are clear (obvious): they are

"immorality, impurity, indecency, 20 Idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife,
jealousy, anger (ill temper), selfishness, divisions (dissensions),
party spirit (factions, sects with peculiar opinions, heresies),
21 Envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like.

"I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who
do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.", Galatians 5:19-21 (AMP)

"22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is

"love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness,
goodness (benevolence), faithfulness, 23 Gentleness (meekness, humility),
self-control (self-restraint, continence).

"Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].", Galatians 5:22-23 (AMP)

"Hermeneutics ... is the theory and methodology of interpretation, especially
the interpretation of biblical texts, wisdom literature, and philosophical texts.",
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermeneutics

As we read biblical texts, we notice certain things repeating themselves,
though often with different, or even contrasting, wording, as in Proverbs.

In paragraph, or prose, form, many biblical texts are hard to study, like Romans.
So, we spread things out, like laying out the pieces of a puzzle. See above.

We will also notice some things are not explicitly stated, but are (obviously) implied.
These implied items must be in agreement with the meaning/intent of all explicit items.

KEY
"==": Equivalent meanings of words/phrases/lines/passages.
"{}" (braces): Commentary, often biblical texts.
{Pattern: ... ... ...}: Overall outline of verses.

Isaiah 55:6 (AMP), {Pattern: A1 == A2}, and Galatians 5:19-23 (AMP)

A1: "6 Seek, inquire for, and require the Lord {"love, joy ..."}
while He {"love, joy ..."} may be found
[claiming Him {"love, joy ..."} by necessity and by right];"
A2: "call upon Him {"love, joy ..."} while He {"love, joy ..."} is near."

Isaiah 55:7 (AMP), {Pattern: A1 == A2, B1C1 == B2C2}, and Galatians 5:19-23 (AMP)

A1: "Let the wicked {"man"} forsake his {"wicked"/"flesh"} way {"immorality, ..."}"
A2: "and the unrighteous man {"forsake"} his
{"unrighteous"/"flesh"} thoughts {"immorality, ..."};"

B1: "and let him return to the Lord {"love, joy ..."}," {Repent}
C1: "and He {"love, joy ..."} will have love, pity, and mercy for him,"

B2: "and {"return"} to our God {"love, joy ..."}," {Repent}
C2: "for He {"love, joy ..."} will multiply to him His abundant pardon."

Isaiah 55:8 (AMP), {Pattern: A1 == A2, B1}, and Galatians 5:19-23 (AMP)

A1: "For My {"Holy"/"Spirit"/righteous} thoughts {"love, joy ..."}
are not your {"wicked"/"unrighteous"/"flesh"} thoughts {"immorality, ..."},"
A2: "neither are your {"wicked"/"unrighteous"/"flesh"} ways {"immorality, ..."}
My {"Holy"/"Spirit"/righteous} ways {"love, joy ..."},"

B1: "says the Lord {"love, joy ..."}."

Isaiah 55:9 (AMP), {Pattern: A1, B1 == B2}, and Galatians 5:19-23 (AMP)

A1: "For as the heavens are higher than the earth," {analogy}
{Contemporary analogy: {"Holy"/"Spirit"/righteous} and {"wicked"/"unrighteous"/"flesh"}
are as different as night and day!}

B1: "so are My {"Holy"/"Spirit"/righteous} ways {"love, joy ..."} higher {different}
than your {"wicked"/"unrighteous"/"flesh"} ways {"immorality, ..."}"
B2: "and My {"Holy"/"Spirit"/righteous} thoughts {"love, joy ..."} {"higher"/different}
than your {"wicked"/"unrighteous"/"flesh"} thoughts {"immorality, ..."}."

{Isaiah 55:6-9 == Galatians 5:19-23}

{The combined effect of reading both biblical texts together
is as if Jehovah is talking to us about repentance in stereo!}

"63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh conveys no benefit [it is of no account].
The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life [providing eternal life].",
John 6:63 (AMP)
