Success Strategies for Your P.O.W.E.R.* Readers - Part 3

by Tonja Taylor
6/13/2022 / Education

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.--Proverbs 22:29, ESV

Your readers--whether it's your child at home, or a class full of "struggling" students--can benefit from these simple strategies. Not only can they gain confidence and positive thinking with the truly helpful tips, but you can sow the Word of God into them!

I have many hours towards a Masters of Arts in Education, and over 30 years' experience teaching. But you don't have to have these to help your students be a P.O.W.E.R.* Reader!

What is a P.O.W.E.R.* Reader? It is a reader who knows strategies for success in "Purposeful Operations With Eternal Rewards"! (This is a term the LORD gave me years ago for my book series, The Adventures of Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R.* Girl!).

The LORD has taught me, even in the past couple of years, to say, "LORD, I yield to You. You are the Master Teacher, Jesus, and You created these children and know exactly what they need. I open my mouth and ask that You fill it; that You give me the tongue of the learned; that You cause them to not be able to resist the intelligence and inspiration of Your Spirit, by which I will speak. In Your Name and thank You! Amen."

So let's get started with Strategies 9-12:

9. While the student reads the text or poem, be ready to help them right then to resay the words they mispronounce--immediately. Correct the mispronunciation, then have the student read the sentence again, speaking the word(s) correctly. Some teachers advise to wait till the end of the paragraph. It's your choice. I have found that it works better for my students when I correct them as they are reading, then have them read again. All the class is hearing it--the correction(s) being made, and the correct reading. (They also know I am paying extremely close attention, which helps psychologically to strengthen the positive relationship.)

10. If a student has been reading intensely for several sentences, and having a hard time with many words, then another student can read for a while. If the second student has as much difficulty, then the text may be too hard for the class, especially if you are teaching a small group. As good teachers, we must adjust as needed to benefit each student, as much as possible. If the text seems to be too hard for the class, the teacher should read it slowly first, and remind the students the word will “stretch” them.

11. It is also good to have a stronger, more confident reader to read some, and to help the students whose skills are not as developed. Putting the kids in pairs, with a stronger reader helping a weaker one, is a good idea. Let them read the text for the class out loud to each other, and then work to persuade the weaker reader of the pair to present it to the class. This will build their confidence and skill. Allow the stronger reader to prompt/help the weaker one, as the weaker one reads aloud. One P.O.W.E.R.* Reader can help beget another!

12. Finding subjects the students enjoy reading is good, but they also need to be introduced to a few works they may never think to choose. Inspirational and fascinating scientific things, along with tastefully humorous works or poetry, are good choices.

There are 8 more strategies for success for your P.O.W.E.R.* Readers, in parts 4 and 5, so check them out!

Also remember, as Philippians 4:13 (AMPC) states: "I have strength for all things in Christ Who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him Who a]">]infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]."

Hallelujah! Go for it! God is with you, and helping you to help your students be P.O.W.E.R.* Readers!

Through books, courses, presentations, service, prayer, worship, and more, Tonja and her husband live to exalt God. Her series for girls, P.O.W.E.R. GIRL ADVENTURES, is now out (books I-V), along with LEGACY; YOUR HOLY HEALTH: VISIONS OF THE KING, and more. See the "River Rain Creative" YT channel.
