Empowering Your Students by Letting Them Teach

by Tonja Taylor

And you shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you rise up.--Deut. 11:19, AMPC

Every day that I teach, I say (as the Holy Spirit Who is God has taught me), "Master, You are the Teacher. You created these students and know what they need. I yield to You."

The LORD is so faithful! He has given me more students (whom I teach virtually) than ever this fall. Halllelujah! So I have asked Him for strategies to help each student with his or her unique needs.

He never fails to supply, and one strategy he gave me was to have my 7th grade student "teach" me, which empowered him--and caused him to have deeper insight on the math problem, as he explained every step of how to solve it. I have done this with younger students as well.

(I know many teachers have used this, but the LORD reminded me about it, and I believe this will be very effective as time goes on, for this student who's sometimes had challenges focusing on the material in front of him.)

This student was a little annoyed at first about it, but I counseled him and told him that, just like a coach invests more time and energy in the "most promising players" on the team, I'm giving him rigorous instruction, because I know he is a leader.

He appreciated that, although he still wasn't too interested in doing all the extra work of having to slow down and think about and explain every step.

He did pretty well, though. I knew he was tired from a full week's worth of school, including running a few miles a day for a track team of which he was part.

So I had him pretend to be the teacher, and have me be the student. He was a little uncomfortable with that, but I told him that "in teaching, we learn," and that we have to truly understand each step of a process in order to explain it well.

We will continue this reiteration of what he has learned, and although it may not be extremely soon, I know he will appreciate this higher level of instruction. His mother does, and she is working closely with me for his success.

How much more does the Holy Spirit work with each of us, not only for our personal success, but for the benefit of others, and in very specific ways. He is so very good and faithful! We bless His name forever!
