P.O.W.E.R.* Girl III - Ch. 16 - Rescue Mission

“Robin!” Pearl said, walking closer. “Is that the fireplace?”

“I don’t know—it’s hard to see.”

“They probably have tinted glass,” Burt said from behind them. “Ladies, I don’t think that’s—”

They heard a scream, then a slam, and a splash.

“The boat’s on fire!” someone yelled. “Mama needs to get out!”

“That sounds like a kid!” Burt said, and banged on the window.

“Hey!” Robert said, running towards them. “What’s going on?”

Burt turned back and pointed. “Pearl, you and Robin go back up to the car, and take Rob and Lucas with you. Now!”

“Yes sir!” Pearl said, and grabbed Robert’s hand. He squirmed and tried to pull out of her grip. “Lord, let Your angels help Uncle Burt put this fire out, so the boat doesn’t blow up and make them all explode—"

They heard screams again.

“Risa! Get a fire extinguisher from the next boat!” Burt yelled, as she was coming down the floating bridge.

“Pearl! Pray!” said Burt, “then call 911!”

“Will do!” At least I have a phone to do it with! she thought.

“Jesus, please help them put the fire out!” prayed Pearl. “Send Your angels to rescue the lady!”

“Fire! Fire!” said Robert.

“Let’s run, Rob!” Pearl said, and let go of Robert’s hand. “See if you can beat me to the car!” They all ran up the bridge and stood by the car, watching.

“I beat ya’ Pearl!” said Robert.

Shhh, little brother,” said Lucas gently. “Please pray.”

“You sure did! Great job!” said Pearl, pulling her phone from her pocket. She dialed 911, and put it on speaker phone. She nodded to Lucas. He nodded back, and grabbed Robert’s hand.

Abran la puerte!” Risa said, knocking hard on the next boat’s front door.

“What?” Pearl said.

“Open the door!” Lucas replied.

Where is everybody? Pearl wondered. The 911 operator picked up and started questioning her.

“Oh, we’re at a lake with Christmas lights—”

“Pearl, tell them we’re at the Hanson Marina in Berryville!” said Lucas.

She did, then handed the phone to him. Lucas answered all the questions, and said, “They’ll be here in a bit. But Burt is handling it well!” He smiled.

I bet he really admires Uncle Burt, his soon-to-be new dad! Pearl thought.

“Thank you, Brother,” she said.

He smiled again, and hugged Robert, who was crying.

“What’s gonna happen?” Robert said, sounding scared.

“Rob, God has got this!” Pearl said. “He knew this was going to happen, and He led us to be here at just the right time to save them!”

Robert nodded, but didn’t say anything.

“Oh no, I can see smoke coming from the roof!” said Robin.

Pearl spotted a man several boats down, looking over to see what the commotion was about.

“We need a fire extinguisher!” cried Pearl to him, and pointed, “That boat is on fire!”

He waved and ran inside, then emerged with an extinguisher. He hurried over.

Meanwhile, Burt had gone into the water between the boats and was swimming with a boy in tow.

“Mama fell in there!” the boy said, and sobbed.

Risa went over to hug him and help him up.

Pearl coughed, smelling a bit of the smoke. It was blacker and higher now, polluting the sky, blocking the stars. The flames were getting brighter and higher, reflecting on the water like bizarre Christmas lights.

Pearl, Robin, and Lucas were praying in the Spirit as they watched.

“Lord, if that woman and her son don’t know You, please let this be the night they ask You into their hearts!” she whispered out loud.

Burt put the boy on the bank. “Run up the bridge with my kids,” he said. “Lucas! Come meet him!”

“C’mon, son!” she said, carrying a fire extinguisher she’d gotten next door. “I’ll stay down here to help if I can!”

She handed it to Burt. “Thank you. I love you, lady! Please go up and be safe!” he said, as he kicked the door open and yelled, “I’m here to help you!”  He pulled the knob on the device and started spraying.

“No, I’m staying here to help you!” she said. “I will pray!”

People started coming out of their boat houses, and getting out of their cars to see what was going on.

Jesus, comfort him! prayed Pearl, as she saw Lucas run down and grab the boy and pull him quickly up the bridge. Help his mom be all right!

She held Robert’s hand while Lucas obeyed. He squirmed, trying to break loose. “Let go, Sissy!” he said.

This time, instead of getting angry, she felt new compassion toward him. Jesus, He doesn’t understand, but I know He is seeing You in action! You are so good! she thought. “Lucas will be right back, Rob Rob,” she said softly.

LORD! Help them see, with all the smoke, and not breathe it! Pearl prayed.

The other man came with another extinguisher and went in and started spraying as well.  Soon, a white cloud seemed to fill the room, and the flames were gone. The smoke turned from black to white.

The kids kept praying, as Lucas helped the boy up the bridge. “Why don’t you sit down and rest?” Lucas said. “We will stay here with you.”

Thank You, Daddy God, for my very polite brother, Lucas! thought Pearl. And thank You for bringing us here tonight! Queen Mother says You are the on-time God. She’s right!

Robert was still crying.  “God, don’t let his mama die like my daddy did!”

Jesus, what should I say to him? asked Pearl in her heart. Then she had an idea.

“Hey Rob, would you sing for me?” asked Pearl sweetly. “I bet Daddy can hear you from Heaven!”

He stared at her. “Jesus loves me,” he sang softly. Pearl nodded, and she started singing with him, then waved at Lucas and Robin to do the same.

They lifted their voices, and the sound grew.

There is power in praising You, Jesus! Pearl thought.

The boy stared at them. “I think I’ve heard that somewhere…”

Pearl walked over to him and touched his shoulder. “Got sent us here to help you. We are praying for you and your mom.”

He nodded, and watched.

The neighbor man and Burt came out with the woman, half dragging, half-carrying her.

“Mama!” the boy said, and jumped up and ran down to her. Risa hugged him and walked with him to see his mother.

About that time, they heard sirens, and an ambulance and a firetruck drove up.

“God took care of it, or it would have been too late!” said Pearl. “He is The On-Time God; the Master Conductor Who is orchestrating our lives, like Queen Mother says!”

Robin nodded. “Amen and amen!” she said.
